Originally released in 2010 a few days before the movie adaptation,Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Gameis a side-scrolling beat ‘em upinspired by the original graphic novels. Players would control Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Knives Chau, and more as they fought through seven levels to defeat Ramona’s seven exes. Featuring local co-op, players can work together to brawl and combo their way through waves of enemies. Much like other titles in theKunio-kunfranchise, Misako and Kyoko can unleash combos, wield a variety of weapons, gain new skills, and use powerups.
River City Girlsfeatures the classic 16-bit art style of arcadebeat ‘em ups but also includes elements such as anime cutscenes and a highly stylized UI to give it a modernized feel as well. Despite its straightforward gameplay,River City Girlsmanages to take the simplicity of classic beat ‘em ups and gives it some stylistic polish while retaining the retro charm. Mother Russia Bleeds
Mixing together the beat ‘em up style of gameplay ofStreets of Ragetogether with theadrenaline-pumping ultraviolence ofHotline Miami,Mother Russia Bleedsis an unforgiving entry in the genre. Much more difficult than typical beat ‘em ups,Mother Russia Bleedsfocuses on a desperate crew of imprisoned street fighters that must overcome an oppressively authority in an alternate U.S.S.R. Players must fight their way through ghettos, prisons, clubs and more using an assortment of weapons.
Despite its gratuitous violence and difficulty,Mother Russia Bleedsis executed well through its tight controlsand stylish environment design. It also features an interesting story, something that is not common in the beat ‘em up genre. As players progress through the stages, the slow unravelling of the mystery helps give a more immersive experience. ThoughMother Russia Bleedsis not for the squeamish, it’s a must-play for any fan of beat ‘em ups that are looking for a challenge.
