Whether under quarantine or just in need of a timesink, a brand new video game might be precisely what you need to idle the hours away. Unfortunately, a lot of them are getting pushed back as of this writing, likeThe Last of Us Part II. This includes gaming events like E3 as well.

While the game industry may be a bit chaotic right now, there are still some stellar games to treat oneself to in order to cope. Two of the biggest, most recent offerings includePersona 5 RoyaleandFinal Fantasy VII Remake. Both games are critically acclaimed PS4 exclusives. Of the two, which one is better? That is to say, what game does what better than the other?
10Final Fantasy VII Remake: New Game+
The wayFinal Fantasy VII Remakehandled its New Game+ mode should become the new standard. Allowing players to go to any chapter with all progress and being able to choose difficulty was the reason why so many players just could not put this game down.
Not being able to do that, but instead having to retread through another fifty hours ofPersona 5 Royalewith not everything saved can be a drag by comparison.
9Persona 5 Royal: Length
On the other side of that equation,Persona 5 Royal, or just the base game, offers more bang for the buck. There is so much to do and see in one or several playthroughs. Yes, being able to skip around would be better and there is a pacing issue, but for the most part the journey is well worth it.
8Final Fantasy VII Remake: Everything Is Voiced
One thing fans had hoped would happen in the re-release ofPersona 5was adding more voices. All of the story stuff is voiced, but side content and companion missions are mostly text-based. The game is roughly split 50/50 between text and voice dialogue, so that certainly did not getfixed. It’s no wonder it tookFinal Fantasy VII Remakeso long to come out at this point. Everyone, even random NPCs, are voiced. The quality is good too.
7Persona 5 Royal: Characters
Final Fantasy VII, remake or original, features some of the most cherishedcharactersin the franchise. The remake does a better job diving into those characters, from main companions to side characters like Jessie. However, neither game comes close to the slow build of relationships inPersona 5 Royale. It legitimately feels like making real-life connections. As a bit of bonus trivia, the voice of Futaba, Erica Lindbeck, also does the voice of Jessie.
6Final Fantasy VII Remake: Combat
The classic, turn-based mechanics ofPersona 5 Royaleare far from boring. That said, in 2020, action RPGs are the slicker games. There’s just no comparing the exhilaration one can get in the heat of battle. That opening Scorpion boss is a prime example. It was challenging, but boy what a thrill.
5Persona 5 Royal: Magic System
The Materia system is better than ever in the remake. However, the vast amount of abilities one can learn from monsters inPersona 5 Royaleis another story.

This is on top of the fact that the game offers a Pokémon-like catching mechanic as well. There is so much to learn and experiment with. As a side note, the monster designs are incredible.
4Final Fantasy VII Remake: Meaningful Weapons
Weapons inPersona 5 Royaleare just that, weapons. Some things may have special properties or fun names, but by and large they just raise stats. Having the gear level up was a great idea to help improve the Materia system inFinal Fantasy VII Remake.

Being able to get new abilities, or gain new buffs as the game went on meant that even beginning weapons, like Cloud’s Buster Sword, could be used without players feeling too handicapped.
3Persona 5 Royal: Mementos
As fun as it is to level up Materia, characters, and weapons, there are rarely chances to actually do that. That is to say there isn’t an easy way to run through areas with monsters repopulating in as quick a manner as the original’s random encounters. Main dungeons are flooded with enemies inPersona 5 Royal,but thankfully they can be avoided if wanted. The best place to actually grind is in Mementos. Corneo’s Coliseum could be likened to a random dungeon, but the matches are too short to get adequate rewards versus the time put in.
2Final Fantasy VII Remake: A Visual Spectacle
Final Fantasy VII Remake, like its original, is an overall spectacle on PS4. From the intense gameplay to the choreography in the cutscenes, this game is a treat to both play and watch. There are some noticeable downsides like blurry textures and pop-ins. But again, as a whole, it looks more modern compared toPersona 5 Royal.
1Persona 5 Royal: Style To Spare
While it may not be a technical showpiece for the PS4, the colors inPersona 5 Royalreally pop. Everything from the menus to the characters all have a visual flair to them. This more than makes up for the technical limitations of the graphics. As amazing asFinal Fantasy VII Remakelooks, it is admittedly more drab with a lot of darker colors.
