During the stream, Amouranth explained that she would get more money from “whales” when she had fewer viewers. Amouranth explained that some “whales” would donate about $90,000 per year to her streams, but that they didn’t send as much money when the view count increased, as they inevitably received less attention from the streamer.
“Whales,” for the uninitiated, are individuals who spend a significant amount of money on something. The term has often been used in the free-to-play gaming space, particularly with mobile games, to describe their most dedicated customers. The vast majority of free-to-play games are played by people who don’t spend anything on them, or spend very little, and so the way these games make money is through thewhales that spend significant sums.
