Another Crab’s Treasureis about a young hermit crab, Kril, who lost his home to a loan shark. He now travels the seas looking for his home and battling through corrupt sea life. By defeating enemies and collecting materials, players can level up Kril’s skill tree branches.
There are a few that are automatic such as the Shelleportation skill which allows players to fast travel. Skewer is like a dash attack, Parry blocks enemies and stuns them, and Streamline gives Kril a floating jump. These are all great skills inAnother Crab’s Treasurebut there are more. So, let’s dive into it to see what else players should unlock quickly.
8Riposte
A Counterattack For Your Parry
Parry, as mentioned earlier, is an ability players have to unlock if they wish to proceed with the skill tree. It will allow players to block an enemy’s attack and then throw them off balance which is already useful.
A great skill to combo that with though is called Riposte which is down the Way of the True Crab section of Kril’s skill tree. It basically adds a counterattack to the Parry ability if players time their button prompts right. Nintendo players, have to hit RB onthe Switch controllerto activate Riposte.
7Self-Repair
Repairing Your Shell
For most of the game, once a shell’s health is depleted to zero, that’s it.Healing can be an important part of any video gamefrom items to actual characters. One way players can heal a shell though is with the skill Self-Repair which is also down the Way of the True Crab run of the skill tree.
If players use their counterattacks well via Riposte they can gain health back for their shell. So, if players deplete let’s say their Coconut shell, they can heal it with small ounces of HP after a well-timed Riposte. It’s not a huge healing factor but it is something.
6Kintsugi
One Last Shot
The Kintsugi skill operates like the Self-Repair skill in that it can be used to repair Kril’s shell. However, it is a stronger version which is also located down the Way of the True Crab section of the skill tree.
The great thing about Kintsugi is that it will repair a shell fully if it breaks inAnother Crab’s Treasure. This can be done once per rest. So, if players break their Coconut shell twice, the second time will destroy it completely unless players rest again at a checkpoint in between repairs. It sounds more complicated than it is and it is extremely useful.
5Skedaddle
Back Dash Like Alucard
Skedaddle is down a different path for Kril called the Way of the Hermit. This will give players a back dash ability similar to the one Alucard uses inCastlevania: Symphony of the Night, one of the most legendary Metroidvanias ever created.
Players have to stand still and hit the dodge ability to activate Skedaddle inAnother Crab’s Treasure. Normally, players can dodge when they apply pressure to directional prompts into the controller typically in a side-to-side fashion. The more mobility players have in a Soulslike, the better which is why they should unlock Skedaddle quickly.
4Housewarming
A Free Umami Charge
Housewarming has nothing to do with throwing a party for Kril or literally keeping him warm. Instead, this skill, down the Way of the Hermit path, will give Kril an extra Umami charge.
Once Umami powers get activated, players can use a shell’s ability three times. Attacking enemies will recharge the meter so that players can use their abilities again. Housewarming then allows players to get a fourth charge, but it can only be used in between rests at checkpoints.
3Scrap Hammer
Do The Mario
Unlike a lot ofother Soulslike games,Another Crab’s Treasuregives Kril primarily one weapon. His fork can get upgraded via the smithy and players do get offensive shell abilities to use during combat too. There is another way to add an attack to Kril’s repertoire via the skill Scrap Hammer.
Scrap Hammer is down the Way of the Predator section of the skill tree. It allows players to attach their currently equipped shell to Kril’s fork thus turning it into a slow but deadly hammer. This will decrease defenses but some players prefer offensive play styles in theharder Soulslike gamesanyway.
2Spearfishing
Crab Over Here!
One of the coolest mechanics inAnother Crab’s Treasurecan be gained within the Slacktide Castle. There is a fishing line that can be converted intoa grappling hookwhich ranks up there as one of the best in games.
Players can use it to platform around environments or it can be used in battle if they unlock the Spearfishing skill. This is located down the Way of the Predator path for Kril. Players can use their hook to bring enemies toward them, similar to Scorpion’s attack in theMortal Kombatseries, but Kril requires Barbed Hook items.
1Umami Training
Make Kril A Better Mage
Umami Training is a stat-boosting skill that is located down each section of the three skill trees. Each rank players put into Umami Training will increase Kril’s Umami power by +5 for a total of +15 if players buy all slots. It’s a great way to make use of shell abilities.
The aforementioned Coconut shell, for example, has an attached ability called Rollout. This will launch Kril at enemies in a fashion similar toSonic’s attacks in his game seriesand that’s only one example of an ability that will be strengthened by Umami Training.
