Capcom’s survival horror classic was constantly at the top of wishlists for a high-definition do-over, but in 2019, what felt like an impossible dream happened, as they produced one of the highest quality remakes of all time and certainly one of the bestResident Evilgames ever. One of the reasons for that was that the combat with the shambling corpses felt better than ever.
The weapons inResident Evil 2feel responsive and wonderfully destructive, as they shred through the zombies with the fantastic gore system that Capcom created for the game. Whether it’s destroying their legs so they’re no longer a threat or annihilating them with a rocket launcher, the confrontations with these undead nightmares are some of the best encounters in the entire series.

Exclusive to Leon’s campaign, the shotgun can be found in a locker in the Safety Deposit Room. Thanks to the game’s incredible gore system, one that allows for complete and total dismemberment of the horde, the shotgun can be one of the most crucial weapons in taking down zombies.
Along with that comes the critical shot, as each weapon has a chance to get an instant kill with a shot to the head. As a strategy that dates backto the original game, it’s one that’s tried and true. Although direct aiming at a specific body part wasn’t a thing back then, players could still manage to do it with a few shots from the pistol. But thanks toResident Evil 2’s pinpoint aiming system, players can easily target a leg and drop zombies to the ground.
Once they’re down, Leon or Claire can go to town with the knife and eliminate them for good. This swift way of taking care of zombies has been consistent throughout the series, and with good reason. It’s a simple, but highly effective strategy that can conserve ammo and keep the seemingly unending horde of zombies at bay.

In Leon’s case, he can get the chemical flamethrower from the Supplies Storage room. It is a brilliant bit of chaotic fun, as the physics of the flames are amazing to behold. For Claire, she can grab the grenade launcher where Leon gets the shotgun. Firing off one of these destructive shells is fantastic, as it torches them and can spread to multiple zombies.

By destroying a zombie’s legs and turning them into a crawler, it’s possible to lure zombies into one ofRE2’s most twisted ways of dispatching them. As they have no other desire other than munching on Leon or Claire, they go wading into the water without care and will drown. It’s another good way to conserve ammo and can keep them out of the way.

Mr. X spends a lot of time inResident Evil 2hunting down Claire and Leon, much in the way thatNemesis does inResident Evil 3. But while Mr. X may seem like he only has eyes for the player, it’s also possible to use his brute strength to one’s advantage to survive for a bit longer.
If Mr. X is chasing the player, and he happens to run into a zombie, he will swat them away with one single shot. If used effectively, it can save the player some ammo and resources at some very opportune times. The player’s ability to use him to dispatch some annoying zombies is just another reason whyResident Evil 2is one of Capcom’s finest efforts of the modern era.
