Summary

The mysteriousNintendohorror game that was recently revealed with a cryptic and creepy trailer has received an age rating in Australia suggesting rather serious adult themes.Nintendois known for its family-friendly games, but the company has occasionally published M-rated games over the years.

One of the most famous Nintendo horror games is theGameCube classicEternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. Developed by Silicon Knights,Eternal Darknessis considered a horror masterpiece by many fans of the genre, and so it’s no surprise that there’s a great deal of interest in Nintendo’s new project despite next to nothing being revealed about it so far. Nintendo still has yet to reveal the game’s official name or gameplay, but an age rating in Australia has revealed some rather dark themes it will be exploring.

According to the Australian ratings board, as spotted by Wario64 on Twitter, the Nintendo horror game will have Strong Themes, Violence, Suicide References/Themes, Cruelty, and Domestic Abuse, which has led to it being hit with an MA 15+/Restricted 13 rating. Notably, theteaser trailer for the horror gameconfirmed that it’s rated M for Mature in the US. Regardless, it’s safe to say that few expected Nintendo to put out a game that includes Suicide References and Domestic Abuse, so it will be very interesting to see what form the project takes when it’s finally revealed to the masses.

Nintendo Horror Game ‘Emio’ Gets Age Rating

The teaser trailer for theNintendo Switch horror gameincludes the message “Who is Emio” and features Japanese writing that has been translated to “smiling man.” The trailer shows a mysterious figure with a paper bag on their head, but not much else, leaving fans to guess about what the game is even about. There’s simply not enough information to go on, but since the project has already received an age rating, chances are good that it will be released sooner rather than later.

Typically, video games get age ratings like this when they’re close to release. Perhaps Nintendo is looking to release this game in October to capitalize on the spooky season. Alternatively, the wait for the strange new horror project could be longer than expected. As it stands, Nintendo’s fall lineup is already looking pretty stacked. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdomis releasing in September,Super Mario Party Jamboreeis launching in October, andMario & Luigi: Brothershiphas nailed down a November release date. However, a horror game would definitely appeal to a completely different audience than those games, so there should be plenty of room for it this fall.
