Call of Duty: Modern Warfareseason 2 begins on Tuesday, and Activision released a roadmap today of everything fans of the first-person shooter can expect to see added in. Among additions to freshen up the game’s competitive scene like the return offan-favoriteModern Warfare 2map Rustare the return of Gunfight Tournaments and a Ruleset Playlist based on the Call of Duty League.

Gunfight Tournaments inCall of Duty: Modern Warfarewere first introduced as a beta test in November 2019 and feature 32 teams of two players battling it out in a single-elimination bracket. They will only be live again “for a limited time” according to the Activision Games Blog outlining the content roadmap.

Meanwhile the Call of Duty League playlist will, as the name suggests, feature the same competitively-focused rules asInfinity Ward’s esports event that launched on YouTube Gamingin January. A full list of the ruleset (last updated on June 07, 2025) can be found at the Call of Duty League website, but notably restrict gear like the crossbow and riot shield from being used, as well as curate specific map rotations and settings for the Search & Destroy, Domination, and Hardpoint modes.

A return to theGunfight Tournaments was teased in Januaryand should appease fans who wanted more, but the CLD playlist announcement has already drummed up apprehension as well as excitement online. Reddit user ChrisBeamsDash posted a public service announcement on the r/modernwarfare subreddit just a few hours ago suggesting that less competitively-minded players should avoid the new playlist — which is decent advice, even if it’s couched in a self-serving desire not to get “costed by casuals.”

While Gunfight Tournaments and the CDL Playlist will be available on season 2’s launch day, according to the roadmap there will be three more game modes appearing sometime mid-season: Demolition, Infected Ground War, and NVG Reinforce. The first-person shooter will also add five more maps, four seen in the leaked official trailerthat be available on launch day and a fifth, Khandor Hideout, that will be released sometime mid-season.

Based on the full roadmap,Call of Duty: Modern Warfareseason 2 should have plenty of content to appease its fans. While not everyone is happy with all of it, such asthe new look of Simon “Ghost” Rileywho is returning to the series as a playable operator, competitive players will certainly rejoice at the bevy of upcoming options.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
