According to Chris Hemsworth,Thorcould be among the characters who eventually returns to the MCU. However, he has one condition for reprising the role.

Hemsworth first portrayed the Norse god in Kenneth Branagh’sThorin 2011. Twelve years later, he’s appeared in a total of nine MCU movies and voiced Thor in two episodes of the first season of Marvel Studios’What If…?His most recent appearance as Thor was inTaika Waititi’sThor: Love and Thunder, and it sounds like Hemsworth thinks it could be his last.

Historically, Hemsworth has been open about hishesitation to reprise his role as Thor. He reiterated these feelings during an interview with the Spanish magazineAccionCine. When asked about his future as the hammer-wielding god, he said, “I have no idea. I’ve said it before, it all depends on the type of story. It has to be something unique. What I don’t want is to do the same with the character until the end, until there is a feeling of exhaustion in the audience. But if there is excitement for it, I am always willing to return. If there is a new story, it has to be something very special. I’m sure there’s something exciting to tell, so we’ll have to wait and see. You have to wait to find it.” While it sounds like Hemsworth is open to reprising the role, some major changes would have to be made, or an out-of-the-box story would have to be presented for him to play Thor again on the big screen.

It’s hard to blame Hemsworth for wanting a change of pace. After all, he played Thor for over a decade. While Thor experienced some physical and emotional changes along the way, he’s not the kind of character who gives an actor room to experiment and try new things. While Waititi’s take on the character gave Hemsworth more comedic opportunities andprovided theThorfranchisewith some much-needed levity, it wasn’t exactly a groundbreaking change to the character.

At the moment, what comes next for theThorfranchise is anyone’s guess. It sounds likefans should expect Hemsworth to step away from Thorfor a while, if not for good. Now that the MCU has fully embraced the chaos of the multiverse, there’s still a chance Thor could return in a different form.Thor: Love and Thunderfeatured Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster taking on the mantle of Thor, and while Jane died at the end of the movie, her inclusion in the story established the precedent for someone else to take over as Thor. For now, fans will have to wait and see if the God of Thunder reappears and in what form he - or she - appears.
