With Marvel already planning ahead for the MCU’s future beyond Phase 4, there has been much speculation about what projects the studio is looking to develop and which actors it has in mind to star in them. One prominent rumor alleges that Sony is working on aSpider-Womanfilm for the MCU, withBooksmart’sOlivia Wilde and Katie Silberman set to direct and write for the project, respectively.
Soon after the news dropped, the internet was set ablaze with rumors regarding who the studio might be considering for the titular role of Spider-Woman. Earlier reports hadTomb Raider’sAlicia Vikander andParks and Recreation’sAubrey Plaza as popular choices in the running. However, it looks like the current odds-on-favorite is nowStar Warsactress Daisy Ridley, with many fans agreeing that she would be the perfect actor to portray the iconic Jessica Drew.

In a recent interview with ComicBookMovie, Ridley provided some much-needed clarity to the situation. She admitted that she had expressed interest in the Spider-Woman role a few weeks ago when someone had asked her about it, but her words ended up being spun out of context. Initially, she responded to the idea of playing the Marvel heroine by saying, “Oh, that sounds great,” simply asserting that itplaying Spider-Woman seemed like a cool prospect. However, some fans took her statement and assumed that she was declaring herself as a frontrunner, which Ridley said wasn’t true.
Afterher work on theStar Warsfranchise, Ridley said she hadn’t actively set out to “do another ‘big film” likeSpider-Woman.In fact, Ridley stressed that she, like most actors, prefers to be approached with new roles or projects rather than pursue them herself. In the case ofSpider-Woman, Ridley confirmed that Marvel never approached her about the role, but she also said she’d still be 100% willing to join MCU should they ever come to her with something that she feels she could deliver on. “I’d be open to anything,” she added.
Ridley also praisedMarvel Studios’WandaVisionduring the interview,saying she thought what they did with it was “so amazing and different and interesting.” She said that it would be very exciting to be in a world like the one they created, which is “ever-shifting and reimagining itself.”
At this point, the status of the allegedSpider-Womanproject remains unclear. Funnily enough, the film may not even be about Spider-Woman at all, as no details about the film’s central focus have been given as of yet. Nevertheless, should Marvel need someone to suit up in red and yellow at some point, they’ve at least got Ridley, a Disney alum, in their back pocket.
