8Prayer To Bast

The opening to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens with a whisper. Shuri whispers to the god of Wakanda, Bast, about saving her brother, T’Challa from an unknown illness. This prayer may be brief, and not the primary focus of the scene, considering audiences are witnessing the tense and heartbreaking moment when the people of Wakanda lose their King, and audiences say goodbye to Chadwick Boseman.

However, the prayer to Bast is worth noting, as Bast is an important character not only in the MCU but in the Marvel Comics mythos. Bast is a Panther-Goddess and is worshipped by the people of Wakanda. Bast has been seen in multiple forms in the comics and decides who is worthy to be the Black Panther based on the heart-shaped herb they ingest.

When Namor and Shuri have their epic battle in a desert as the Sub-Mariner and the Black Panther, Namor utters the phrase “Imperius Rex”. This word has arich history with Namorand shows that his battle cry from the comics remains true in the MCU. Imperius Rex is a Latin translation of King Emperor, a famed catchphrase of the underwater king of Marvel Comics.

The catchphrase may be confusing to some, and even toNamor’s enemies, but in Marvel Comics, it doesn’t harbor any meaning other than an important battle cry to Namor, to let his enemies know that he is the King Emperor.

It’s no secret that the Mutants have been absent from the MCU for quite some time. Part of this is specifically because Marvel Studios did not own the rights to many Mutant characters for decades. Now that they do, Namor can state he is a Mutant, which is entirely true, and is the MCU’s first Mutant, just as he was the first Marvel-published mutant in 1939.
