Hogwarts Legacyhas reminded players that Hogwarts' iconic Sorting Hat will function a little differently in-game to how one might expect. Despite staying true to theHarry Potterfranchise in many ways,Hogwarts Legacywill aim to let players control their own adventure.
Houses are confirmed to be a key part ofHogwarts Legacy, with a recently revealedstunning image of the Hogwarts Great Hallfeaturing each of the four Hogwarts Houses very prominently. WithinHarry Potter, students are typically sorted into a House by the Sorting Hat, a sentient hat once owned by Godric Gryffindor. With few exceptions, such as when Harry Potter requested the hat place him into Gryffindor as opposed to Slytherin, the decision of the Sorting Hat has always been final and typically does not involve any input from the student being sorted.

However, in a recent tweet byHogwarts Legacy, the game has reminded players that “the witch or wizard always has the final say as to which House they belong to.” The tweet, which not only confirms the presence of the Sorting Hat within the game, implies that players will be able to pick their own Hogwarts House, should they not be happy with the hat’s original decision. WithHogwarts Legacyset to be a massive open-world experience, the game is clearly looking to give players as much freedom as possible throughout their adventure – even if that means changing the Sorting Hat a little.
While personality tests and other means have typically been used to decide a player’s personality type at the beginning of games, something whichHogwarts Legacymay still do during the initial sorting process, this tweet confirms that players will be able to forego the final decision of the Sorting Hat, should they wish to be assigned to a particular Hogwarts House. With recently revealed footage showing players the fourHogwarts LegacyCommon Rooms, players may already have developed a liking for one particular house, and this feature will allow them to ensure their character is sorted into it, even at the behest of the Sorting Hat.
While the Sorting Hat is an iconic part of theHarry Potterseries, the massive emphasisHogwarts Legacyplaces upon being accessibleto all kinds of players is welcomed and ensures that the game will have a replayability factor. This will enable players to experience the events ofHogwarts Legacyacross each of the four Hogwarts houses.
