With everything going on, which includes a number of exciting movies coming out as well as just some general unhinged screaming at reality, it can be easy to forget that there’s actually anotherIndiana Jonesmovie in production. Luckily, director James Mangold has offered a little reminder that not only reinforces the sequel’s very real status, but also gives fans a bit of a progress report.
Mangold, who earned the respect of many as the director of hits likeLoganandFord v Ferrari, has taken over the helm of the upcoming 5th entry in the surprisingly long-runningIndiana Jonesseries. Currently under thetemporary title ofIndiana Jones 5, the movie remains a bit of an enigma to fans and outsiders alike. But Mangold now has at least one concrete update for those excited to see Indy again.

On Twitter, a fan tweeted a new year’s greeting at Mangold while slipping in a casual question about the filmingprogress ofIndiana Jones 5. Clearly not one to mince words, Mangold answered with “About a month remaining.” So for anyone unaware that the 5th movie was in active production, this should serve as a pleasant surprise that not only has filming been underway for a good bit of time already, but it’s tantalizingly close to hitting the post-production phase, even after being pushed back a whole year.
For those still unsure about anIndiana Jonesmovie directed by somebody other than Steven Spielberg, it’s probably worth checking out Mangold’s stellar filmography. Aside fromLoganandFord v Ferrari, which alone should cement his aptitude for filmmaking, he also directed the well-regarded Johnny Cash biopicWalk the Linein 2002. Perhaps less relevant but no less interesting, Mangold even worked on the animation screenplay for the 1988 Disney filmOliver & Company.
It’s kind of funny how Harrison Ford seems willing to keep coming back as Indiana Jones after lobbying for decades to finally kill off Han Solo in theStar Warsfilms. That juxtaposition of 2 legendary Hollywood characters portrayed by the same person and yet regarded far differently by him is a bit of a curiosity on its own. But it also might subtly hint at what Indy’s fate could end up being inIndiana Jones 5. Considering how it addedPhoebe Waller-Bridge as a rumored replacementfor Ford, things could definitely go a new way.
But fans shouldn’t get all up in arms just yet. It’s still got a capable director and Spielberg is still producing. After hisabsolutely phenomenal 2021 remake ofWest Side Story, it’s clear that he still knows what he’s doing. So with the watchful eyes of the original director and the fresh eyes of a modern master, maybe there’s hope yet for this rogue archaeologist’s future.
Indiana Jones 5is currently set to release on June 30th, 2023.
