Summary
WithInvincibleseason 2 releasing in the coming weeks, many wonder how things will start following the events of season 1’s finale, particularly with the titular character Mark Grayson, a.k.a. Invincible. Showrunner Robert Kirkman revealed how Mark’s story continues after his father, Omni-Man, leaves Earth.
Kirkman revealed thatInvincibleseason 2 will delve into Mark more or less following in his father’s footsteps since he was technically Earth’s best defense against any threat. That will be on his plate on top of the ultimatebetrayal he felt after Omni-Man beat Markwithin an inch of his life in his attempted takeover of the planet.

While talking withIGN, Kirkman revealed what Grayson will have on his plate following the events ofInvincibleseason 1. “I think we kind of hit the ground running with a lot of chaos,” Kirkman said. “Mark and Debbie are dealing with a huge betrayal of Nolan, and his absence on the planet is something that’s affecting them deeply. Mark is in this place where he was on this trajectory to become this superhero, and everything seemed to be going really well. Now, he’s been shaken to his core. Aside from the betrayal, he’s also left with being the new last line of defense on Earth. He’s the guy that’s the only one strong enough to actually replace Nolan, so he’s kind of thrust further into this superhero world that he may not quite be prepared for, and there’s no end of conflict that’s boiling on the planet that is coming at him nonstop.”
The main lesson Mark took away fromInvincibleseason 1 was that being a superhero was not as easy as it looked. Though being one was all he ever wanted and was granted, Mark had several brushes with death. The closest one is his fight with his father when Omni-Man finally reveals his true self as a tyrannical alien set on taking over Earth along with his race. With his father gone and no one knowing if and when he’ll return, Mark no longer has a safety net in case his missions fail. That may also be what helps him progress as a super, but that may not be a good thing, as new threats will come to earth.
Kirkman has hinted thatGrayson’s story will change inInvincibleseason 2not just because his father is gone but because now, with some experience under his belt, Mark will start to improve himself as a superhero, or in other words, win some fights. However, Kirkman hinted that this new wrinkle would make Mark more arrogant, as becoming the strongest being on Earth may get to his head. Collateral damage resulting from this action may worsen his image as a defender of the planet.
Even with Omni-Man out of the picture,Invincibleseason 2 expands on subplots introduced in season 1,like the Coalition of Planets, and enters into new territory that fans have yet to see. This could help extend the universe’s worldbuilding while also progressing Mark into the superhero he wants to be. The show may also delve into how being fatherless may traumatize Mark, as any household with a single parent would, an area that superhero media hasn’t explored much.
Invincibleseason 2 will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 15, 2025.
