What Happened To Donald In Invincible Season 1?
Donald made his debut in the second episode ofInvincible, titledHere Goes Nothing, where he escorted Mark Grayson and his mother, Debbie, to visitNolan Grayson, also known as Omni-Man, who lay in a coma following an assault by an unknown assailant. During this encounter, Donald enlightened Mark about the clandestine operations of the Global Defense Agency (GDA), an organization that covertly aids superheroes. He also disclosed the GDA’s lack of knowledge regarding the perpetrators behind the massacre of the Guardians of the Globe, the world’s foremost superhero team. Additionally, Donald showcased some of the GDA’s cutting-edge technology and armaments, including the Reanimen, remote-controlled cyborg soldiers.
Throughout the investigation into the Guardians' murder, Donald played a pivotal role, collaborating with Cecil and the demon detective Damien Darkblood to unearth clues and suspects. He also contributed to monitoring Omni-Man’s recuperation and activities as suspicions arose regarding the hero’s potential involvement in the atrocity. Donald was present when Omni-Man regained consciousness from his coma and divulged his true identity as a Viltrumite, a belligerent alien race that had dispatched him to Earth to pave the way for an invasion. Subsequently, Donald bore witness to Omni-Man’s ruthless slaying of the new Guardians of the Globe and numerous GDA agents and resisting Reanimen.
Donald’s ultimate act transpired in the seventh episode,We Need to Talk, when he made a sacrificial attempt to eliminate Omni-Man using a potent explosive device. InInvincibleSeason 2, Episode 1, Donald Ferguson is shown to be alive and working for the Global Defense Agency again. This comes as a significant surprise to viewers since, in Season 1, Omni-Man killed Donald by crushing his back during their fight. Donald’s body was then buried under the rubble when the house they were in exploded. However, in theInvinciblecomics, it is revealed that Donald is a robot.
Donald was originally a normal human agent for the GDA, but he died during a mission at some point. The agency’s director, Cecil Stedman, had Donald’s brain preserved and used to power a mechanical body for him. In this way, Donald could essentially be rebuilt whenever his body was destroyed. It’s likely that after Omni-Man killed the original human Donald, the GDA used their robotics expert, D.A. Sinclair, to reconstruct Donald as a cyborg.
Now, as an android, Donald has enhanced powers and durability. He can repair himself and even weaponize parts of his mechanical body. However, in Season 2, it seems Donald may not be aware that he is a robot. Over time, Donald learned the truth about his new robotic nature in the comics.
