In the wake of Amazon’s MGM acquisition,James Bondmight present the company with the biggest possibility for expanding a franchise beyond what’s already been done with it. However, forSkyfallandSpectrewriter John Logan, 007 is one of those things that’s best left alone in its currents state.
Unlike theRockyproperty, which is already set on a new path withMichael B. Jordan’sCreedsaga, James Bond is right at the tipping point to undergo significant changes due toNo Time to Diebeing Daniel Craig’s last 007 film and the impending necessity to pick a new Bond. For now, Eon Productions has cooled any rumors concerningNo Time to Die’srelease by making it clear Amazon’s business will not alter the movie’s theatrical debut this fall, but it’s what the future could hold that’s worrying some 007 fans.

In an article published by The New York Times, Logan told many stories regarding his experience working on two Craig’s 007 films by saying, “Bond isn’t just another franchise, not a Marvel or DC,” largely in part because Eon productions has been in the hands of the Broccoli and Wilson families for so many decades. Logan worries that Amazon’s corporate interest might eventually start to influence the creative process behind James Bond films, which consists of turning scripts into “the most anodyne and easily consumable version of itself.”
Logan, who’s also worked on modern classics likeGladiator,The Aviator, andSweeney Todd, highlighted his favorite day working onSkyfallbeing when he and director Sam Mendes pitched the idea of having James Bond’s first encounter with Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) turn slightly homoerotic. This was something almost unheard of for the spy, who is considered the textbook definition of masculinity. To his surprise, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson greenlit the idea instantly, without having to consult it with anyone else or worry about the consequences that it might have.
All these elements and the family business approach to James Bond is what Logan believes has enabled 007 to remain relevant for so long, a feat that cannot be ignored as the franchise closes in on its 60th anniversary. While there arearguments for James Bond to grow past cinemas, it is true that almost every 007 movie transmits a bespoke vibe to it, with no film really being too much like any other that came before it, except for the fancy cars, clever gadgets, and beautiful women, that is.
Eon Productions has guaranteed the studio is committed tomaking the best James Bond movies it can, and the production company still holds a 50% stake in 007, so the spy’s transformation from cinema to content won’t happen overnight. Hopefully,No Time to Diewill be the kind of love letter that reminds everyone just how fantasticJames Bondcan be at his best.
No Time to Dieis scheduled to be released in theaters on Jun 09, 2025.
