Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3writer-director James Gunn teased the gigantic scale of the upcoming Marvel Studios film. The third installment of theGuardiansfranchise is slated to start filming later this year.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3will see Chris Pratt,Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Elizabeth Debicki reprise their iconic roles. The threequel will take place afterThor: Love and Thunderin the MCU timeline. As of right now, details onVol. 3’s plot have not been released. Fans last saw the Guardians crew aboard the Benatar alongside Thor inAvengers: Endgame.

Gunn, who was notably reinstated to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3after he was fired for past Tweets, compared working onDC’sTheSuicide Squadand theGuardiansfilms. The filmmaker toldComicBookthat theGuardiansmovies are different because they force him to use different parts of his brain.“I mean, Guardians movies are more geometric,” said the filmmaker, while adding, “This Guardians, in particular, is just gigantic, so I’m just finishing the story that I feel like I need to finish.” Gunn teased that the film will tell Rocket’s story fully and features a heavier plot than its predecessors.

Gunn has made it clear that the threequel will be his final film in the series. Marvel Studios' tenth film is looking to build off of the success ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which grossed $863 worldwide and earned positive reviews from critics. TheGuardianscast will also appear inThor: Love and Thunderand Gunn’sGuardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.The Disney Plus special will debut on the streaming platform in late 2022 and is expected to lead directly intoVol. 3.

Meanwhile,Gunn’sThe Suicide Squadwill be released simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max this August. The standalone sequel to David Ayer’sSuicide Squadwill see a group of convicts from Belle Reve Hospital come into conflict with a telepathic alien starfish named Starro while attempting to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory. The ensemble cast includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark. Gunn noted thatThe Suicide Squadwill feature a narrative separate from the first film’s story arc.

Gunn recently wrapped filming the eight-episodeThe Suicide Squadspin-off seriesPeacemaker. The upcoming HBO Max show will focus on John Cena’s Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. The ensemble cast includes Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), and Chris Conrad (Patriot).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is scheduled to be released in theaters on Jun 08, 2025.
