Michael Shannon, who played General Zod inMan of Steel, said that his return to the role inThe Flashwas not satisfying. Previously, Shannon stated he was “a little confused" when he first got the offer to return as General Zod. Shannon’s reaction is understandable since Superman snapped General Zod’s neck inMan of Steel. But in these multiverse movies, any character can return.

The Flashwill be based on the comic book storyFlashpoint, where Barry Allen uses his super speed to travel to the past to save his mother. This results in an alternate timeline where everything is different. In the trailers, fans see a second Barry Allen played by Ezra Miller,Ben Affleck returning as Batman, and Michael Keaton returning as the alternate timeline Batman. Sasha Calle is playing Supergirl, and General Zod has a non-snapped neck.

In an interview withCollider, Shannon talked about what it was like returning as General Zod after 10 years. “Yeah. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor,” he said. “These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, ‘Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!'” Shannon said he preferredwhat Zack Snyder didwith the character inMan of Steel. “It’s not quite the in-depth character study situation that I honestly felt Man of Steel was.” Shannon did not like how the studio treated Snyder and his DC films. He even asked for Snyder’s blessing to play the character before accepting the role. After receiving Snyder’s blessing, Shannon felt comfortable playing the role, but in the end, he was not satisfied as an actor.

With theSpider-Versemovies,Everything Everywhere All at Once,Spider-Man: No Way Home,Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and nowThe Flash, these multiverse blockbuster films have become trendy. It can be cool for the audience to see their favorite character return or even have a specific actor make a cameo that means more outside the film than it does in it. However, sometimes it can feel like “playing with action figures,” which is fun, but there isn’t always a lot of depth.

Despite his dissatisfaction with his role as Zod inThe Flash, Shannon said he isexcited to see Miller’s performance inThe Flash. Shannon also said that what Miller has to do in this movie is pretty crazy. Shannon is probably talking about how Miller plays two characters inThe Flash. Some fans speculate that one of those characters may be the Reverse Flash, but fans don’t have to wait too long to see.
