NetherRealm Studios has been teasing the announcement ofMortal Kombat 1for some time, and this past week it finally delivered. A cinematic trailer introducing the fighting game, revealing it will reset the timeline of theMortal Kombatfranchise, was shared this past Thursday. Fans were left pondering whatMortal Kombat 1’s gameplay really looks like, though. Luckily, they won’t have to wait long to find out.Theannouncement trailer forMortal Kombat 1piqued many fans' interest, to say the least. In the trailer, there are just over ten seconds of cinematic combat focusing on the extreme violence that theMortal Kombatfranchise is well known for. There’s even a cinematic Fatality shown. Confirmation was delivered via the Summer Game Fest Twitter account, which posted, “Don’t miss the world gameplay premiere ofMortal Kombat 1when Ed Boon joins Geoff Keighley live on stage at Summer Game Fest on Thursday, June 8.” It seems thatMortal Kombatco-creator Ed Boonwill be attending the June digital presentation and will shareMortal Kombat 1’s gameplay reveal himself.

The Summer Game Fest, for those who aren’t familiar, is an online games showcase that has supplanted the in-person E3 convention which historically took place in early June. This year’s Summer Game Fest is expected to run two hours and will feature game announcements and reveals from dozens of partners. NetherRealm Studios will be one such partner. The gameplay reveal could happen at any point within those two hours.

The gameplay forMortal Kombat 1isn’t likely to reinvent the wheel.Mortal Kombathas been a staggering success for over 30 years, after all. But there are questions that do need to be answered. This is the first current-genMortal Kombat, so it’ll be exciting to see whatMortal Kombat 1looks like on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.Mortal Kombat 1is also launching on Switch, though, which could have interesting ramifications.

NetherRealm Studios has also said thatMortal Kombat 1will be adding new gameplay features. That includeswhat NetherRealm calls a Kameo systemwhere players choose both their fighter and an ally to assist in fights. If NetherRealm wanted to shake upMortal Kombat’s traditional gameplay, the timeline rebootMortal Kombat 1is doing looks like a great opportunity. Players can see for themselves what that looks like during the Summer Game Fest on June 8.
