Summary
Mortal Kombat 1chief creative officer Ed Boon reveals that more reveals are coming, with 4 additional character confirmations planned for Gamescom Opening Night. With a release date rapidly approaching in September, Netherrealm Studios has been revealing new content and characters at a rapid pace following the recentannouncement ofMortal Kombat 1back in May. New events like Comic-Con and Summer Game Fest have given NetherRealm ample opportunity to showcase new trailers, many of which held new surprises and reveals like the recent confirmation of Reptile.
In fact, players just wrapped up a closed beta test this past weekend as a closed beta test was held for those who have alreadypre-orderedMortal Kombat 1. While limited on content overall, the beta did include characters like Li Mei, the Frost Kameo, and Johnny Cgae, in addition to the earlier beta content. However, even with the beta weekend over, it’s clear that NetherRealm has plenty more to share with the community and the next round of reveals is right around the corner.

As he has been known to do,Mortal Kombatco-creator Ed Boon has started teasing new content for fans, though this time it is much less cryptic than usual. As part of Gamescom Opening Night Live,Mortal Kombat 1will be showcasing a brand-new gameplay trailer that features two new playable characters as well as two additional Kameo fighters. While Gamescom officially kicks off on August 23, Geoff Keighley’s event begins a day prior on August 22, so fans will want to tune in at 2pm Et/11am PT to see what NetherRealm has up its sleeves.
To this point, the roster ofMortal Kombat 1has included a mix of classic and 3D era fighters including Havik and Ashrah who have not been seen in a franchise game in well over a decade. As fans continue to wait to see the final launch day roster, leaks have continued to appear revealing new content including the potential of a new game mode called Invasions or thepotential reveal of Shujinko as a kameo fighter, something that could be coming as soon as tomorrow at Gamescom Opening Night Live.
While this news should pleaseMortal Kombatfans overall,Geoff Keighley has attempted to temper expectations for Gamescom Opening Night Liveoverall. While his other ventures, The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest, have become places for new reveals and plenty of surprise announcements, Keighley isn’t trying to take that approach with Gamescom. Instead, Keighley has positioned this show as a way to update fans on the progress of already announced games, rather than focusing on huge and surprising reveals.
Mortal Kombat 1launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
