Nintendohas officially announced plans for its next Nintendo Direct event to be held in early March, but its focus will be on theSuper Mario Bros.movie and not video games.Nintendofans have a lot to be excited about through the rest of 2023. There are major AAA game releases for the Nintendo Switch, the Super Nintendo World theme park in Universal Studios Hollywood now being open to the public, and much more. Yet this upcoming March Nintendo Direct is going to be particularly special.
This won’t be the first Nintendo Direct of 2023. On February 8, Nintendo held an event to showcase some of its biggest projects of 2023.The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomwas a major focus, but there were also reveals for aMetroid Primeremaster, a newProfessor Laytongame, and the addition of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles to the Nintendo Switch Online and Expansion Pack subscriptions.

The surprise is that the upcoming Nintendo Direct won’t befocusing on the Nintendo Switchor any of the gaming platform’s upcoming releases. Instead, Nintendo’s presentation will be focused on a movie.The Super Mario Bros. Movieis slated to release on April 7 and Nintendo wants to build up some excitement for the film. The Nintendo Direct will officially air March 9 at 2:00 PM PT/5:00 PM ET.
As for the Nintendo Direct’s contents, all that Nintendo is saying is that it will be debuting the finaltrailer forThe Super Mario Bros. Movieduring the presentation. If Nintendo planned to show just a trailer, it likely wouldn’t be holding a Nintendo Direct to do so. As such, there may be some additional news about the movie that Nintendo shares as part of the event.
The only other detail that Nintendo shares is that there will be “no game information” included in the Nintendo Direct.The Super Mario Bros. Movieis Nintendo’s sole focus. That means there will be no surprise DLC forMario Kart 8, no newMarioplatforming game, or any other gaming news at the show. Perhaps there will be adjacent news like merchandise announcements, or something similar.
This isn’t the firstSuper Mario Bros. MovieNintendo Direct, of course. Nintendo has already held two such Nintendo Directs, one in October 2022 and one in November 2022. Each of those Nintendo Directs featured a new trailer, as well as introductions from Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, Illumination’s Chris Meledandri, andactors including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Seth Rogen. Expect a similar presentation forThe Super Mario Bros. Movie’s next Nintendo Direct on March 9.
