The Wrap’sUmberto Gonzalezrecently confirmed the Nightwing movie is among the canceled DC projects. Gonzalez replied to a post by Home of DCU, who said, “I hope Chris McKay still gets to work on his Nightwing movie.” Gonzalez didn’t mince words in his response when he said, “That project is dead.” McKay directedThe LEGO Batman Movieand signed on to helm a live-action Nightwing movie for the DCEU in 2017. The film was supposed to beconnected to Ben Affleck’s Batmanmovie but was changed to possibly be a solo movie with little connection to the rest of the DCEU.
In June of 2021,Mckay saidNightwingwas still stuck in development hellat Warner Bros. He was also given a little bit of hope for the film when DC announced that they would release movies likeBatgirlandBlue Beetleon HBO Max and hoped that would give him a chance to make his film. However,Batgirlwas never released despite being finished, andBlue Beetlereceived a theatrical release with a disappointing box office performance.
When Gunn was put in charge of DC Studios, he had a specific plan for the company’s future. Fans are disappointed Nightwing was cut, as the character has been popular for a while and increased in popularity with a solo comic run that has been well-received andappearances in other media likeGotham Knights,Titans, andHarley Quinn.
Unfortunately, Mckay’sNightwingfilm won’t be made, but hopefully, fans will see Nightwing on the big screen in the DCU and possibly inThe Brave and The Bold.
