Edward Weevil is a former Shichibukai and the self-proclaimed son of Edward Newgate, better known as Whitebeard. Weevil was introduced in the story after the time skip, and he left quite an impression onOne Piecefans. At the time of his introduction, Weevil had a bounty of 480,000,000 berries, which very likely increased after the abolition of the Shichibukai system.
Weevil travels with his mother, Miss Buckin, who used to be a member of the Rocks Pirates and MADS. Together, the mother and son have traveled to several places inOne Piecein hopes of claiming Whitebeard’s treasure. The pair claim that Weevil is Whitebeard’s son, so all of his father’s treasures naturally belong to him. However, Weevil’s claim seems bogus, mainly because they have almost zero similarities. The two only have a couple of things in common, such as their white mustaches and their physical strength.

A Throwback To Young Whitebeard
Weevil’s physical abilities have been compared to those of a young Whitebeard, which is a massive compliment. A young Whitebeard’s power wasequal to that of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. So Weevil is not someone who can be overlooked by his opponents. What lends more credibility to his supposedly monstrous strength is the fact that Kizaru made the comparison between Weevil and Whitebeard. A veteran like the Navy Admiral would be aware of the strength of Whitebeard, so at least physically, Weevil is extremely powerful.
Weevil’s weapon of choice is the nagatina, which is the same as Whitebeard’s, although it is highly unlikely that it is a Saijo O Wazamono grade weapon. Weevil seems to have a great deal of control over his weapon, and he has used it to defeat many allies of the Whitebeard. Considering the fact that most of them have been sailing in the New World for a long time, Weevil’s feats become even more impressive. Weevil has also been confirmed as a user of Busoshokuand Kenbunshoku Haki. While he has not demonstrated his skill with Haki, it is reasonable to assume that he has a great degree of control over it. So far, Weevil has not been confirmed as a devil fruit user, but Oda can change that in the future.
Confrontation With An Admiral
InOne Piecechapter 1073, it was revealed that Weevil and Miss Buckin had traveled to Sphinx in an attempt to reclaim Whitebeard’s treasure from Marco. However, Marco was awayfighting the Beasts Pirates in Wano, so Weevil couldn’t fight him. While Weevil and his mother waited on Sphinx, the Marines made their way to the island, as they also wanted to get ahold of Whitebeard’s riches. The upholders of justice started bullying innocent people, but they were stopped by Weevil. After being completely overwhelmed by the former Shichibukai, they withdrew from the place.

However, they weren’t going to let this transgression pass, so they called for backup. To deal with a monster like Weevil,the Navy relied on the services of Ryokugyu. The Admiral was already eager to prove himself to Akainu, so he couldn’t pass up the opportunity and went to Sphinx. The fight between the two was taken off-screen, but it was confirmed that Weevil was taken away by the Navy. There’s no doubt that Weevil put up a good fight against Ryokugyu, and considering there were no major signs of destruction, the former Shichibukai could have been forced to surrender against his will.
Future Role
Following his defeat, it is fair to assume that Weevil was taken to Impel Down by the Navy, where he was probably placed on the same level as Doflamingo. According to Oda, Weevil is going to play an important role in the story, which makes sense considering the fact that he has been saving the former Shichibukai for the last saga. Furthermore, the fact that Weevil and Doflamingo are still alive means that they will certainly make an appearance in the future. Fans can expect Oda to disclose Weevil’s true parentage, and it is very likely that he will be revealed to be a clone created from Whitebeard’s lineage factor.
It has already been confirmed that the lineage factor of an individual contains every small detail of their life. According to Kizaru, the strength of the two pirates is akin to each other, and it is possible to achieve this result by using the lineage factor. In addition to the lineage factor, the scientists at MADS probably made some other changes, which is why there is a difference in their physiques. Weevil’s body is covered with stitches, which is unusual for a normal person and adds more fuel to this speculation.
Another thing that hints toward Weevil being created in a laboratory is the fact that Oda decided to reintroduce Miss Buckin as a member of MADSand the Rocks Pirates. This came at a time when the onus is on Egghead Island, which is filled with inventions of the future such as clones, satellites, etc. Miss Buckin’s lack of interest in avenging Whitebeard and her rebuking of Weevil when he brought up the idea was rather bizarre. She seems only interested in acquiring the treasure of Whitebeard, which is not something someone who loved the great pirate would do. Considering all the information revealed in the series so far, it definitely appears that there is a scientific element behind Weevil’s creation.
