InOne Piecechapter 1098, Eiichiro Oda reveals Jewelry Bonney has the same Sapphire Scale disease Ginny died of after having been captured and enslaved in Mariejois. Though fated to die at 10,she is now 11, and fans are eager to know how she survived beyond her life expectancy.
Many in theOne Piececommunity believe Bonney’s Toshi Toshi No Mi Fruit is the secret behind her survival, but another interesting theory states that she may actually already be dead. Of course, this can’t be entirely true as we see her in the manga, but it could actually be that this Jewelry Bonney may be a clone.

What is the Sapphire Scale Disease?
The Sapphire Scale diseaseis a mysterious fatal illness in theOne Pieceworld, first introduced in chapter 1098. Not much has been revealed of this rare condition, but it is known that it involves the appearance of sapphire-like stones on the victim’s body and spreads through exposure to natural light. As of the current chapter there is no cure, and though avoiding sunlight can delay the spread, death is inevitable.
Though it is yet to be confirmed, the sequence of events involving Ginny may imply the disease is sexually transmitted. According to this theory, Bonney being infected also makes sense as in this case she would likely have contracted the disease in her mother’s womb. Regardless, it is likely it’s somehow tied to either the Celestial Dragons or Saturn of the Gorosei directly.
Is Jewelry Bonney a Clone?
The idea that Jewelry Bonney may be a clone may seem absurd, but there is reason to believe this might be true. If this is the case, it would explain both the disappearance of the Sapphire Scales seen under her eyes inOne Piecechapter 1098, and her continued survival beyond the ten-year mark.
Given how Bonney has been confirmed to have already been on Egghead Island, it is likely that Kuma brought her there while searching for a cure for her disease. Of course, the solution may have been found in theToshi Toshi No Mi Fruitas many in theOne Piececommunity believe, similarly to how Law was cured of his White Lead Disease when he ate the Ope Ope No mi. Nonetheless, the Seraphim prove Dr. Vegapunk has done a lot of research on cloning and Kuma’s Nikyu Nikyu No Mi might even hold the answers to transferring human consciousness into a clone’s body, providing another possible solution to Bonney’s problems.
Since Kuma’s memory bubble shows that he is able to separate memories from the human body, he could have used this as a way to save Bonney’s mind from her body’s tragic fate. Kuma may have even allowed himself to be turned into a cyborg as a sacrifice to see if this procedure was possible before attempting it on his daughter. In fact, when Bonney views his memories in chapter 1072, she laughs and seems relieved at what she discovers. A possible reason for this is that she may have discovered the truth about herself and in doing so, realized that if she still has her memories,Kuma can still get his backtoo.
More information on the disease and Jewelry Bonney’s survival will likely come in the near future, and asOne Piecefans eagerly await chapter 1099, the community is coming up with many theories on how the current events may play out.
