The game has become an early framework for a combined universe of entertainment franchises, with the likes of Marvel,Star Wars, and more appearing in the game since it became popular. Of course, digital success has bred real-world success, and nowFortnitefans have the chance to buy an absurdly expensive shirt.
Luxury clothing brand Balenciaga now has a line ofFortniteapparel, and while most of the designs are shockingly simplistic, the line comes with outrageously high price tags. Perhaps the most gasp-inducing is the Fortnite 2021 Shirt Large Fit, a plain white button-down that has theFortnitelogo on the chest and “Balenciaga” below it. There’s writing on the back of the shirt, though it’s plain black text. Those interested in the sweet but simple design will have to cough up $995 for the honor of wearing it.

Other articles of clothing featured in the line boast similar price tags. For instance, there’s aFortnitet-shirt for $495, aFortnitehat for $395, and a large fit jacket that clocks in at $1,290. It’s all a bit baffling, especially considering thatFortnitet-shirts with similar designs can be found on Walmart’s website for under $20. Of course, the thing really carrying the price tag here is the Balenciaga name.
Clothing brand partnerships aren’t an uncommon thing in the games industry. In fact, certain ones have been incredibly popular, like the line ofPokemon-themed shirtsthat highlighted a specific Pokemon with each new entry. Never mind the countless other, smaller collaborations that have happened since the video game scene exploded.
On top of official video game clothing options, fans have a tendency to create their own, custom designs. These can be as simple as prints on t-shirts to something as complex as renders ofretro console-inspired sneakers. With video games becoming an increasingly mainstream pastime, in part due to the pandemic, gamers can expect to see more video game clothing options pop up.
While the market for designer Fortnite clothing doesn’t seem massive, someone will undoubtedly end up buying it, either ironically or out of legitimate interest in the brand and game. The price tag will be easy to scoff at for many people, though, as the cost could easily be applied to something like aPS5 or Xbox Series X, or even a few weeks worth of groceries.
