As manyPokemonfans imagine their favorite Pokedex entries with different looks, one Houndour fan has created an edit of what the Pokemon may look like without its skull mask.Pokemon Gold and Silverintroduced another 100Pokemonto the Pokedex already established with Gen 1, and many of the Gen 2 Pokemon are fan favorites, including the Dark and Fire-type Houndour.
WithPokemon Red and Blue, the primary dog-themed Pokemon was Growlith and its evolution Arcanine, butPokemon Gold and Silverchanged that with Houndour, Houndoom, Snubbull, and Granbull. Similar to Cubone and Marowak who are made to look more intimidating to their foes with the skulls on their heads, Houndour has a skull mask that provides a glimpse of the darker aesthetic it gets upon evolving. Though much fan art often interprets Pokedex entries like Houndour as newPokemonregional variants, one enthusiast just wanted to know how the dual-type Pokemon would look without the mask.

Reddit user PhantasmalFish has garnered 1,000 upvotes on a post focussing on theGen 2 PokemonHoundour who can first be captured inPokemon Gold and Silveron Route 7. According to PhantasmalFish, they love the Dark and Fire-type Pokemon, and their adjustment to its design was made because of their curiosity, resulting in a hilarious look that they have deemed “derpy.” With the skull mask making it look like Houndour is doing the Pokemon attack called Mean Look, its removal changes its perceived scowl into something far less intimidating.
On the base design for Hondour, the bottom of the skull mask acts like a brow that leads to its snout, with an eyehole in the ornament just above the dual type’s own eye. Without the skull mask, more of Houndour’s outward-facing eye shows, with the pupil looking almost cross-eyed because its focus is normally on the object covering most of its face. Although PhantasmalFish considers the changed Dark andFire-type Pokemonderpy, it maintains its strong stance and the cuffs along its legs are still a hint to the Houndoom that awaits it upon evolution.
While it’s currently unclear how the skull mask is attached to Houndour inthePokemonanimeand games, it’s likely born with it and can’t be as easily removed as with PhantasmalFish’s fan art. Though PhantasmalFish’sPokemonfan edit imagines Houndour just without the iconic skull mask, there are several other similarly colored attachments that could be removed to show what looks like a Pokemon version of a Rottweiler.
