Today’s Pokemon Presents featured the highly anticipated third trailer forPokemon Scarlet and Violet, as well as a longer commentary trailer that discussed all the features that Gen 9 will include. There are many key elements at play inPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s fully explorable,open-world Paldea region, and one of the most compelling is the battle gimmick for Gen 9 – the Terastal phenomenon. With Terastallization, any Pokemon in Paldea can change its type and empower the moves of that same type during a battle, with the effect lasting for the entirety of the encounter.
One of the focal points ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s third trailer is the fauna of the Paldea region, which includes three new Pokemon in the form ofPaldean Wooper, Fidough, and Cetitan. All the new Pokemon inPokemon Scarlet and Violetmay evolve at some point, and their evolutions could impact the franchise in multiple ways, starting with Paldean Wooper, which is the first Ground/Poison-type in the series since Gen 1’s Nidoran family. The trailer also included footage of Koraidon and Miraidon’s alternate forms and how players can travel through Paldea as part of the open-world setting.

Another detail shown inPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s third trailerthat may have flown under the radar is the fact that Pokemon can now evolve in the overworld, rather than in the usual evolution screen that has been a staple of the series since Gen 1. This is a very interesting feature that also improves the immersion side of the RPG experience, as players can seamlessly evolve their Pokemon in the wilds and even during a battle rather than using in-game menus to do so outside of fights.
Furthermore, the Pokemon community noted that the pocket monsters will still have to go through a written prompt when learning new moves inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, but this too can be done while in battle or in the overworld. In fact, the screenshot shared by Centro Leaks on Twitter shows Quaxly trying to learn Wing Attack while touring Paldea, possibly as a result of a battle or exploration feats. This can be done in the middle of another action, and it doesn’t require players to stay on the moves menu like in the past.
Today’s trailer alsorevealedPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s pre-order bonus, which is a free, otherwise unobtainable special Pokemon with a unique Tera type and move available. It’s worth noting that, despite the fact that learning new moves won’t require the use of the old menu, players will still need to use the in-game menus to navigate battles and inventory.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetlaunch on November 18, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
