Summary
Despite being over eight years old,Fallout 4remains popular among fans of theFalloutfranchise as one of the series' best mainline installments. Offering over 150 hours of content, the Wasteland adventure continues to call its fans back regularly, with some players even claimingthey have just now beatenFallout 4after eight years. Now, Bethesda is aiming to keep the game alive even longer with a next-gen update slated for release sometime in 2024.
Announced in October 2022 as part of the celebration ofFallout’s 25th anniversary, the next-gen update will remasterFallout 4for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Originally, Bethesda planned to launch the update sometime in 2023. To the dismay of fans, the developer announced last December on theFalloutX (formerly Twitter) page that the next-gen update was delayed to 2024 because it needed “a bit more time,” and a specific release window is yet to be disclosed. Fortunately, it’s possible to speculate on when the update will launch based on Bethesda’s history with theFalloutseries.

Predicting the Release Window of Fallout 4’s Next-Gen Update
Bethesda Could Release the Update Alongside the Live-Action Fallout TV Series
While the next mainlineFalloutgame has yet to be announced, fans do havethe live-actionFalloutTV seriesto look forward to, and it’s possible the launch ofFallout 4’s next-gen update could coincide with the TV show’s premiere date. Set to premiere on Jul 05, 2025, the live-action series aims to stay true to the underlying premise of theFalloutfranchise while simultaneously bringing something original to the table.
Bethesda may decide to take advantage of the hype surrounding the show and releaseFallout 4’s next-gen updatealongside it. This is arguably the most likely release window for the update, especially as it was originally scheduled for a 2023 release, and waiting until late 2024 might be considered counterproductive. If the update doesn’t launch with the TV series, it may very well be released shortly before or after the show premieres.
The Next-Gen Update’s Release Window Could Follow in the Footsteps of Past Fallout Games
TheFalloutseries has observed a fairly consistent seasonal launch window since it began in 1997, and it’s possible the next-gen update forFallout 4could follow suit. For the most part, all ofFallout’s mainline titleswere released in October, with the exception ofFallout 4. However,Fallout 4’s release was only in November, and not far into it either.
Fallout 4was released in November 2015, so Bethesda may wait until November 2024 to launch the update. However, given that the update was originally meant to launch in 2023, it’s unlikely the developer will wait that long. Even still, the possibility can’t be entirely ruled out. After all, there are likely at least two years between now andthe release ofThe Elder Scrolls 6— which Bethesda says will be released before the nextFalloutgame — so there is plenty of time to launchFallout 4’s next-gen update.
AlthoughFallout 4was released in November, every mainlineFalloutgame before it was released in October, so Bethesda may also choose to release the update in October. At the very least,if the next-gen update doesn’t launch in April 2024, surely it will launch sometime between October and November. However, fans are undoubtedly hoping for an earlier release, so April would be ideal. Until then, players can still enjoy everything thatFallout 4has to offer, including its massive library of user-created mods — many of which have been useful for making some ofFallout 4’s most impressive settlements.
