WithPlayStation 5stock constantly being sold out and inventory disappearing from shops as soon as it arrives, fans looking to get the new console have been growing incredibly frustrated with the console-buying process. However, with criminals now stealingPS5consoles from moving delivery vehicles, acquiring a system may be even harder.
Instead of refreshing retailer pages or coping viaSNL’s hilarious PS5 skit, groups of thieves have decided it would be easier to get some PlayStation 5 consoles by carrying out heists. Though the process looks like something straight out of aFast and Furiousfilm, the so-called “rollover” strategy sees three or more vehicles working together to break into a moving semi-truck, stealing the goods inside. While many items can be stolen through the incredibly risky maneuver, PlayStation 5 consoles have become the hottest item to steal as of late.

In an article from The Sun, it was revealed that these types of heists have occurred “27 times this year alone,” in the United Kingdom. While PlayStation 5 issues have been prevalent in the UK, such as thecancelation of UK-based PS5 pre-ordersand the wrong items being shipped, a huge number of stolen consoles is by far the most surprising. With the Holiday season kicking off, police believe that the heists are only going to be more likely, and a video from 8 years ago has been making the rounds to show people what the heist looks like.
The video in question comes from On Demand News, and it sees two gang members exiting the vehicle’s sunroof to open the cargo truck’s back door. While the men in the video eventually give up on the heist attempt, likely not having the necessary tools to open the vehicle, more recent attempts have been more successful — and more extreme. Taking inspiration fromtheFast and Furiousmovies, two vehicles are used to box the truck in, with the main vehicle setting up behind the semi.
The risk-taker attempting to secure the PlayStation 5 is usually tied to the car via a rope, opening the back of the truck with a crowbar or cutting tool. Once inside, the criminal grabs everything they can, tossing it back onto the main vehicle. Despite being hard to pull off correctly due to all the moving vehicles, the absurd heist setup is supposedly becoming a major problem within the UK. Whilethe PlayStation 5 scalper groupis certainly frustrating, the semi-truck thieves are doing something truly dangerous.
Oddly enough, this is not the first story on gaming-related theft to come about over the last few days. With aprofessional gamer’s chair recently stolenas well, it seems like video game fans cannot catch a break during 2020’s holiday season.
