Surviving the world ofDon’t Starvewas already a challenge, even for the most seasoned survival genre veteran (there’s so much to take in at first). When Klei Entertainment released follow-upDon’t Starve Together, players were met with a whole new set of challenges and mechanics that required teamwork. Fortunately, along with these new challenges, a unique array of items and weapons were also added that players could use to fight the monsters of the night.

Ranged weapons stand out from the rest, as they can keep a player out of harm’s way (especially when dealing with pesky monsters like the Killer Bee). Not all ranged weapons will make a player the ultimate fighting machine, though. Knowing which ones are the strongest and/or most useful is key for surviving the terrors of the night inDon’t StarveTogether.
10Water Balloon: Spheroid Fire Suppression
How To Craft It:
The Water Balloon is perhaps the weakest ranged weapon inDon’t Starve Together, since it only adds 20 Wetness to the affected monster. Despite this, though, it can certainly prove very useful if used correctly. For example, many seasoned players use Water Balloons before fighting Dragonflies, since it protects them from Lavae.
Another use of the Water Balloon is to put out fires, which can prove vital if a player accidentally sets important elements of the world on fire when using the Fire Staff.

9Blow Dart: Every Shot Counts
This simple but effective ranged weapon can kill most mobs with two to five hits, as each deals 100 damage. If a player wants to add even more of a bang to their Blow Dart, they can use a variant like the Fire Dart, Sleep Dart, or Poison Dart.
The heavy downside of the Blow Dart, however, is that it can only be used once, which means every shot counts! Fortunately, a player can carry a stack of 20, or they coulduse a mod(Don’t Starve Together boasts many useful ones)to overhaul the stacking system and grant themselves more ammo.

8Poison Dart: Slow, But Potent

Perhaps the weakest Blow Dart variant (in terms of raw damage per shot), the Poison Dart deals two points of damage every 10 seconds for two minutes, resulting in 26 total damage. The poison damage stacks, though, so if a player shoots a mob twice, the foe will take 52 overall damage. It’s vital to bear in mind that any food dropped by an animal that has been poisoned will be stale, which means players will only restore 2/3 of their hunger bar and 1/3 of their health points. That’s why Wurt is considered one of theone of the best characters for beginners, since he can eat stale food without suffering a penalty.

7Fire Dart: Set Enemies And The World Ablaze
Fire Darts are deadly to friend, foe and resource alike. They will start a fire anywhere they land, so players should be extra cautious while using it near their bases. On top of that, Fire Darts will turn non-consumable loot into ashes, so it’s crucial to use them mindfully.
Additionally, crafting a Fire Dart for the first time willdecrease the player’s Sanity (one of the game’s most interesting features). Nevertheless, it does have a great damage output of 120. Players should measure the risks and rewards of using it.

6Sleep Dart: Put Enemies To Sleep
ManyDon’t Starvefans considered the Sleep Dart one of the best ranged weapons. Unfortunately, it was downgraded quite heavily inDon’t Starve Together, but it remains useful in several situations. Since this handy projectile does no damage, it’s best used in conjunction with the Boomerang or a similar weapon so the player can capitalize on its effect.
The other issue with the Sleep Dart is that it has diminishing returns, which means that every time a player puts a mob to sleep, the duration of its effect on that particular foe is reduced.

Klei Entertainment first introduced the Electric Dart in theDon’t Starve Togetherdownloadable contentA New Reign.Since then, it has proven to be one of the most powerful ranged weapons in the game. While its base damage is only 90, it gains a 2.5x damage modifier when a mob is wet, which increases its potency to a mighty 150! In exchange for this power, though, crafting an Electric Dart is quite expensive since it uses 1 Gold Nugget per Dart. As such, players are advised to wait to craft them untiltheir base is nearly complete.
4Boomerang: Reusable, Solid Damage, But Needs A Steady Hand
Perhaps the first ranged weapon most players craft, the Boomerang can take down most hostile mobs with a couple of hits. Additionally, this projectile weapon will always return to the player, no matter how far from their target they are. With great power comes great responsibility, however: the player needs to make sure they catch the Boomerang (by pressing the action key or button) every time it returns. Failing to do so will see it cause the protagonist damage (and it will lose extra durability) on returning.
This annoying catching mechanic and its less-than-stellar damage of 90 is all that really holds the Boomerang back.

3Weather Pain: Blow The Enemies Away
Players seeking to harness the power of the wind will see the Weather Pain as their perfect companion, since it creates tornados to destroy everything in its path. In addition, the Weather Pain is great for removing weaker monsters that spawn from foes like Big Tentacles or Spider Queen. Unfortunately, the tornados created by the Weather Pain are somewhat unpredictable, so players wielding this formidable weapon should not use it near their base.
Apart from taking down a lot of mobs, the Weather Pain can remove trees and various debris from a player’s path, which may be useful if they don’t feel like removing the obstacles one by one.

As Winona (one of the many available characters inDon’t Starve Together)would say, “This magic stuff is a safety hazard.” This is certainly true of the Fire Staff, which can set aflame almost anything in its vicinity. Additionally, it costs one Sanity point every time a player uses the Fire Staff, meaning that it can be very dangerous is more ways that one. The Fire Staff is held back from being the best ranged weapon inDon’t Starve Togetherby its volatile nature.
1Ice Staff: Freezes Enemies In Their Tracks
Despite causing no damage, the Ice Staff continues to be the best ranged weapon in the game with ts freeze mechanic. Most small creatures will become frozen after only one hit, while larger ones like Treeguards will need at least four blasts before becoming frozen. Another nifty perk is that animals frozen by the Ice Staff will sometimesdrop useful loot, which has led to some interesting farming methods that involve continuously freezing an animal until it drops loot.
Similarly to the Sleep Dart, though, the Ice Staff was hit by the nerf hammer, so every blast a player makes will increase the mob’s resistance to freezing. Players should be careful not to overuse it.

Don’t Starve Togetheris out now for PlayStation 4, macOS, Xbox One, Linux, and Microsoft Windows.
