Robloxhas announced that it will be joining hands with Nickelodeon and Paramount to bringSpongeBob SquarePantsandTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesto the platform. WithRobloxcontinuing to grow since going public a few years ago, the platform has been turning towards more collaboration opportunities in a bid to grow its footprint. This announcement comes as the latest addition on that front.

WhileRobloxhad a strong presence in the gaming industry over its 26-year period, it wasn’t until its availability on iOS and Android that the virtual sandbox really started to thrive. Roblox Corporation continued to build on the platform’s growth trajectory, most notably by bringing popular IPs ontoRoblox. Recently even the popular entertainment franchiseDave and Buster’s launched itsD&B WorldonRoblox. Now it looks like the publisher may be bringing more popular franchises to the platform in the near future.

Announcing its latest collaborative effort with Gamefam, Roblox stated thatSpongeBob SquarePantsandTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtleswill be coming to the platform, with both of these will be two standalone experiences developed by the company. As per Paramount Senior Vice President Doug Rosen, the idea is to “let the millions ofSpongeBob SquarePantsandTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesfans inside these worlds play and explore alongside the iconic characters they know and love.” So far, no release date has been announced although both of these projects are expected to go live later in the year.

TheSpongeBobandTMNTannouncement follows other popular collaboration efforts such asSonic the HedgehogonRoblox. In fact, bothSpongeBobandTMNTalready exist in theRobloxworld. The Nickelodeon character is part of theNickversegame whereas 2007’sTurtle Troublewas the firstTMNTentry ontoRoblox. In any case, the two franchises should come as a welcome addition considering how both still continue to be popular choices among the younger audience.

Interestingly, despiteRoblox’s seemingly high popularity, the platform itself hasn’t fared in the same vein when it comes to financial performance. Even amid player growth,Robloxreported $300 million in lossesin the third quarter of 2022. The company further stated that net losses are to be expected in the coming quarters, mostly due to its long-term investments being based on non-GAAP targets. Regardless, there seems to be no shortage of interesting new content for Roblox fans, especially withSpongeBobandTMNTmaking their way to the platform. Still, it will be interesting to see howRobloxwill look to sustain and build its massive popularity in the months to come.
