TheMortal Kombatmovie reboot just wrapped filming a couple of days ago, with much of the project being kept secret. While some of the biggestMortal Kombatcharacters have already been confirmed for the movie, there are some who still have yet to be announced, including Shao Kahn, who is hugely important to the franchise’s lore. Since Shao Kahn originally appeared inMortal Kombat 2, it’s possible he’s being saved for a potential sequel, but fans may still get a look at him in the 2021 movie reboot.

Rumors ofShao Kahnbeing in the newMortal Kombatmovie have appeared online thanks to some social media posts involving former WWE wrestler and current actor Nathan Jones. Jones is known for his brief stint in the WWE where he worked with the likes of The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar, as well as his acting career, having appeared in films likeTroyandMad Max: Fury Road.

Jones lives in Australia, which is where much of theMortal Kombatmoviewas filmed. On December 6, Jones posted an image of himself on Facebook while out to eat with Daniel Nelson, who is working on stunts in theMortal Kombatmovie reboot. Jones revealed in the post that he had been “training weapons” with Nelson. A video was then posted online of Jones swinging a large hammer, which is the signature weapon of Shao Kahn in the video games.

While it’s certainly possible thatNathan Joneshas been cast as Shao Kahn in a cameo role or maybe even an after credits scene to set up the sequel, it’s just as likely that he isn’t involved in the movie at all. Perhaps he was just messing with one of the props for fun and there is no connection to theMortal Kombatmovie reboot. However, the presence of the hammer could be an indication that theMortal Kombatmovie reboot will have Shao Kahn in some capacity, even if it isn’t Nathan Jones playing him.

Fans may be looking too much into these social media posts (and it’s worth pointing out that we were unable to find the video of Jones swinging the hammer outside of the embedded Instagram post, so it may be taken out of context), but it’s certainly an interesting theory to entertain. We know that theMortal Kombatmovie has characters from the sequels, and Shao Kahn’s important to the lore, so it would be surprising if he wasn’t at least mentioned. Even so, fans should take any information on Shao Kahn in theMortal Kombatmovie reboot with a grain of salt until something official is announced.
