Sega is kicking off 2024 with a newSonic Superstarsupdate. Last year was jam-packed with excitingSoniccontent, and this was capped off with the release ofSonic Superstarsin October. In contrast toSonic Frontiers’ open-world 3D approach,Superstarsharkens back to the Blue Blur’s side-scrolling heyday with a 2D platforming experience that sees Sonic and his friends race to stop a trio of villains under the leadership of Dr. Eggman.Sonic Superstarsadded a few new tricks to the traditional, fast-pacedSonicgameplay, such asunlockable Chaos Emerald powersand co-op and competitive multiplayer modes.
WhileSonic Superstarsfell short of Sega’s sales expectations following its launch late last year, Sonic Team is still committed to supporting the game through online updates and DLC content. In addition to the usual bug fixes,Sonic Superstarsadded LEGO versions of Tails, Knuckles, and Amy to go with theSonic and Eggman pre-order skins, as well as a new version of Amy modeled after her appearances fromSonic Adventureonward. More recently, Sonic received a festive holiday character skin back in December, similar to the one added toSonic Frontiersin late 2022.
The latest update forSonic Superstarsis now live across all major platforms. According to the patch notes, Update 1.15 adds an option to reset the player’s scores in Time Attack Mode. This will only delete the scores saved in the user’s local save data though; the scores posted toSonic Superstars’ online leaderboardswill still remain intact. There are also various bug fixes included in Update 1.15, though the exact details aren’t specified.
Shortly after the aforementioned holiday skin was added toSonic Superstars, a dataminer claimed to have uncovered clues about future DLC. This includes an appearance fromSonic’s brooding rival Shadow the Hedgehog, though this could be in the form of Sonic wearing a Shadow costume rather than a classic-style version of the dark hedgehog himself. Additionally, Amy could receive a “retro diner” outfit that is being referred to as “IHop Amy” in the leaked source code.
In the meantime, Sonic Team is starting 2024 with a more modestSonic Superstarsupdate that gives players a reset option for Time Attack Mode alongside some smaller quality-of-life bug fixes. Despite its slow start in sales, Sega still has its hopes forSonic Superstarsin the new year, with both the recently-released third season of theSonic Primeanimated and the upcomingSonic The Hedgehog 3film potentially driving up interest inSuperstarsas 2024 rolls along.
