It’s not uncommon for gamers' opinions to change, as evidenced by the fact that a bunch ofSons of the Forestplayers have gone off the AI companion Kelvin following a recent update. As successful as the survival sequel was upon release, even going so far as toboost sales for Endnight’s previous gameThe Forest, the hype has certainly died down. That’s not to say the game isn’t enjoyable, though there was one aspect of it that really pulled players in that has since been changed.
When it released on February 23,Sons of the Forestfans immediately fell in love with Kelvin, the mute and brain-damaged NPC who’s been programmed to complete tasks set by the player. He offered a little company for those who were tackling the titular forest alone, while also proving useful by gathering logs and other materials. However, he wasn’t perfect by any means, though it seems that his blunders were what made him so adored, and now the community is not as enamored by him.

As spotted by The Gamer, a thread on Reddit shows that someSons of the Forestplayers are not as in love with Kelvin since the last big patch. The post, which was started by user SB10K, features a still from the classic 1972 filmThe Godfatherin which Don Corleone expresses dismay over how his boy was massacred, referencing a specific moment in the film. SB10K has likened this to the way Endnight has changed how Kelvin functions in the game, and a few others have agreed that he’s no longer the companion they once loved. One user even outright said that they “hate Kelvin now.”
This is due to the recentmajor update forSons of the Forestfixed a few bugs in this early access version of the game. One of the big changes was to the AI’s programming, which now makes it so that Kelvin doesn’t accidentally chop down a player’s base when collecting wood. While this makes Kelvin a lot more useful, it seems a few no longer recognize the bumbling NPC now that he’s more competent.
It may not end there, either. As the game is still in development, it’s likely thatEndnight will be releasing furtherSons of the Forestpatchesas the studio works towards the full release. This means the companion is probably going to become ever more helpful and less of a potential hazard, even though some fans would like to keep the original Kelvin they were infatuated with at the start.
Sons of the Forestis available now in early access on PC.
