Splitgatehas become a runaway success, with the arena shooter amassing millions of players in its beta. TheSplitgatebeta will continue indefinitely as the developers continue working on the game and improving things on the backend, with plenty of new content planned for future updates. Something that might be a part ofSplitgatein future is some kind of story, though fans shouldn’t necessarily expect a full-blown single-player campaign.

In a TikTok video, theSplitgatedeveloperstalk about the possibility of the game having a story mode or single-player campaign. While remaining noncommittal to the idea, they seem to be open to the possibility ofSplitgatehaving a story similar to the live-service battle royale games that are on the market. For example, those games have an overarching narrative and in-game universe that builds from one season to the next, and so it seems thatSplitgatehaving something similar is definitely on the table.

Presumably, aSplitgatestory would provide some context for the game’s arena battles, which currently sees red and blue armored characters fighting it out with weapons and portals. WhileSplitgate’s versus multiplayer battleswould certainly remain the game’s focus, some fans may want some lore to chew on so that there’s a reason behind the fighting, the portal technology, and the maps they’re playing on.

Splitgate’s maps could be ripe for storytelling, as environmental storytelling is something else that’s done quite a bit by live service games. As it stands,Splitgate’s maps don’t have any narrative reasons for being there, though the developers have done things like adding aTerminatorEaster egg to the Lavawell mapto give them a bit more flavor than they would have otherwise. It will be interesting to see if futureSplitgatemaps hide other Easter eggs for fans to find as well.

Splitgate’s release date has been delayed indefinitely, and so it’s unclear when the game’s proper Season 1 will start. Whenever it does, fans can expect the game to add a new Battle Pass filled with new cosmetics, plus it’s quite likely that new maps or game modes will also debut with Season 1, though specific plans have yet to be announced.

It’s possible that fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out aboutSplitgate’s future, though.Splitgatewill be at Gamescom, where the developers are teasing some big news for the arena shooter. Anyone interested should verify to tune in to Gamescom Opening Night Live on Wednesday, August 25 at 11am PT.
