There are a ton ofStar Warscharacters who have seen some pretty dramatic changes to their designs and overall place in the series over the years. But one could argue that few reach the developmental levels of Boba Fett, who has gone from nearly silent background character to star of his own show in just a short 40 years.
It’s interesting to look back onhow Boba Fett has evolvedthroughout his time in theStar Warsfranchise, and now, one talented animator has offered a delightfully palatable way to do just that. In a series that specializes in exploring how characters have changed throughout their appearances in media, YouTube channel Tell It Animated does exactly what it says on the tin. Their latest target, as prompted by commenters, is the surprisingly deep variety of changes seen to Boba Fett’s look from wee young clone to Tatooine crime boss inThe Book of Boba Fett.

Contrary to what some might expect, the video doesn’t start withThe Empire Strikes Back, which serves as Boba’s first canonical appearance. It actually goes in chronological order, beginning with the character’s lookinAttack of the Cloneswhen he was simply the young clone being raised by Jango Fett. Every aspect of his outfit and design is explored, from clothing to hairstyle. But while things remain generally as expected for fans familiar with the eventual bounty hunter’s story, the video takes some surprising turns.
One section of note is how Tell It Animated delves into Boba’s starring role in theunfortunately canceledStar Wars 1313video game. The game would have centered on Boba Fett in the gritty setting of Coruscant’s lower levels, and his planned outfit reflected that. The design detailed in the video features bandaged up legs and a heavy gun strapped to his back, as well as a color scheme more accurate to Jango than the greens many now associate with Boba, since he apparently hadn’t recolored his father’s armor yet at this point.
Another lesser-known design discussed in the video comes from an unlikely animated source. No, it’s not theStar Wars Holiday Special, though that does get a mention just before this. While many know about his first official appearance in theHoliday Special, a good chunk probably don’t realize he also showed up in the short-livedStar Wars: Droidsanimated series in 1985. His design largely remained similar to that of theHoliday Special, albeit removing his pronged rifle that inspired Din Djarin’s now iconic weapon onThe Mandalorian. The video made sure to specify which appearances are non-canonical, likely driving that nail deeper into the hearts of fans who still haven’t gotten over the cancelation of1313.
Boba Fett is a fascinating character who has only gotten more multifaceted over the years. This video is a fun and clever way to visualize one aspect of his always-evolving characterization, and it’s probably worth checking out the rest of Tell It Animated’s videos to see similar breakdowns of other characters in any number of franchises. Just don’t get sucked too far into the YouTube rabbit hole. Everybody has to sleep sometime.
