The creation of the upcomingStar Warscoming-of-age seriesSkeleton Crewactually began on the set ofSpider-Man: No Way Home. This info comes straight from Jon Favreau, who serves as executive producer forThe Mandalorianwhile also starring in the recentSpider-Manfilms as Harold “Happy” Hogan.
It turns out that Favreau, who has been making a pretty substantial mark in theStar Warsfranchise alongside frequent collaborator (and currentStar Warsaction figure) Dave Filoni, had a pretty fateful conversation withNo Way Homedirector Jon Watts on the movie’s set. It’s pretty common knowledge now that Watts is in charge ofSkeleton Crew, but the fact that he shared a production withThe Mandalorian’s producer now turns out to be a “happy” trick of fate. During Disney’s most recent D23 Expo, Favreau detailed just how the idea got off the ground during the film’s creation, and how the idea didn’t just come out of nowhere.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be an actor in the three latestSpider-Manfilms,” Favreau said during a presentation, as reported byComic Book Movie. “Kevin Feige’s back there going, ‘Yeah, [the audience] likesSpider-Man. They likeSpider-Man.” Not much surprise there, since audiences do indeed likeSpider-ManandMarvel Studios boss Feigecertainly knows it. “But I was working with Jon Watts and I happened to mention to him the last time I was there that I’m working on [The Mandalorian], and how much fun it is,” he continued, “and would he ever want to collaborate, thinking maybe he might direct an episode or something. And he said, ‘Oh, no, no. We have a really fully-formed idea for what we want to do.'”
So it looks as thoughSkeleton Crewwasn’t just conjured out of nowhere and assigned to the first director who came along. Watts himself had the idea and fully intended to play a big part in the production. All he was waiting for was the opportunity from Lucasfilm, and a door was opened by Favreau’s fateful comment about possibly directingan episode ofThe Mandalorian. New projects have certainly launched from flimsier docks, that’s for sure.
Skeleton Crewwill star Jude Lawin a story about a group of youths getting lost in the vastStar Warsgalaxy during the time period afterReturn of the Jedi. Very little else has been revealed just yet, but many will likely find that premise to be rather familiar. The relatively new kids’ seriesStar Trek: Prodigyshares a similar idea, featuring a ragtag group of youngsters taking to the stars in their own ship.
It’s unclear what else the 2 series will share, but with Watts at the helm, it’s bound to be something that keeps the target audience glued to their seats. Here’s hoping it’s exactly what younger viewers have been looking for fromStar Wars.
