After launching a few months ago,Star Wars Squadronshas gone on to become a big hit for EA’s Motive Studio. Primarily focused on immersive space battles between the Empire and New Republic,Star Wars Squadronsis a unique EA game in that it isn’t full priced and the studio made the decision tonot rely on downloadable content or live service content. Instead the game takes the old school approach by offering fans everything from day one with plenty of unlockables to be had.
What’s interesting is that following the game’s launch and positive reception, fans became a little disappointed thatStar Wars Squadronswas essentially content complete and wasn’t likely getting any more ships or maps. Thankfully, the overwhelming reception ultimately changed the viewpoint of the studio who announced nearly a month later thatnew content was being made to thank fansfor all of their support and would release prior to the end of 2020.

With only a few weeks left until the end of the year, the second free update forStar Wars Squadronsis finally ready for download. Update 4.0 sees the addition of the New Republic B-Wing ship as well as the Imperial Tie Defender. According to the trailer, the Defender boasts a higher than average toughness and speed, while the B-Wing may be on the slower side, it more than makes up for it with a nearly maxed out Firepower stat.
However, this update also features plenty of new cosmetic items such as clothing for characters, cockpit items, as well as ship paint in addition to new components players can use to further customize their ship loadouts. Finally, the biggest piece of this update for many is likely the ability to now create Custom Matches. This mode allows players to customize a ton of settings from the map and mode to privacy levels, modifiers, spectator mode, suggested skill level, and more.
Update 4.0 follows in the wake of the previousmajor free update that came in November. While also providing a number of fixes and game improvements, the biggest addition was support for next generation hardware. In addition to visual quality, loading, and lighting improvements, the update also added in support for 4K resolution and 120 FPS. Content-wise, Update 3.0 brought some new cosmetics as well as a new map called Fostar Haven for players taking part in the Fleet Battles or Dogfight modes.
