Publisher Electronic Arts has taken the spotlight in the last week. While its recent EA Play showcase still has players talking, before the big eventEA was releasing its catalog on Steam. With many ecstatic about the option to play these games on Valve’s client, some problems are arising after launch.
Of the big list of EA published games to release on Steam,Mass Effect 3saw considerable fanfare. The original trilogy’s finale was welcomed by fans, but elation has quickly turned into frustration.Mass Effect 3, a controversial finale to the original series, has some significant performance issues on Steam with players reporting drops to sub-15fps.

According to Game Debate, the culprit of this performance knock stems from the Origin in-game overlay that is applied to EA games. Just after launch a thread appeared on the Electronic Arts official forums which also points to the overlay as the issue. Responses explain that users should attempt to disable the overlay which had been known to affect performance. The problem withMass Effect 3’s Steam releases is that the overlay is continuously enabled.
Some users in the thread posted support conversations which point to the problem as being a technical issue with Steam. Taking a peak at the Steam user reviews, which currently sits at a “Mixed” rating, many players are suffering from the aforementioned poor performance. The top five up-voted reviews all acknowledge a widespread problem and urge others to hold off on a purchase until a fix is released.
Mass Effect 3released last week as part of EA’s previous rollout of games on the Steam client. Yesterday had a whole new slew of games that were previously locked to EA’s Origin client on PC. The recent batch of releases includeTitanfall 2,Dead Space 3,A Way Out,Need for Speed: Most WantedandNeed for Speed: Payback. The big title to come with these releases is theSims 4which has 10 million active users.
Fans are hoping thatMass Effect 3’s performance issues are fixed quickly. Some are ready to replay the trilogy on PC again after the rumoredMass Effect Trilogyremaster was not at EA Play.
