Now thatSuper Mario RPGhas finally hit store shelves, some fans seem to be craving more Mario adventures like it. WhilePaper Mariomay be getting a remake in 2024, what fans really want is moreSuper Mario RPG. Even though that original game was never followed up on with sequels, Nintendo needs to consider rectifying that now that the remake has put the IP front-and-center again.

Super Mario RPGseems to be a one-of-a-kind title, which makes it feel special but also makes it seem like a major missed opportunity. It may have inspiredthe likes ofPaper MarioandMario and Luigi, but it never truly got its time to shine as a Mario subseries. However, that could all change now that there is a renewed interest in Mario RPGs. Even if it takes until the Nintendo Switch 2 to happen, it really needs to be followed up on.

The First Super Mario RPG Was Left Untapped

No one quite knew what to expect fromSuper Mario RPG:Legend of the Seven Starswhen it launched in 1996. Taking a character known for platforming games and putting him into the RPG genre seemed like an extremely strange idea, but it seemed to pay off immensely. The game was met with critical acclaim, it is sometimes considered one of the best games of all time, and it would quickly garner a loyal fanbase. However, Nintendo and Square Enix would do nothing with the brand afterward.

Instead of releasing a fully-fledged sequel toSuper Mario RPG, Nintendo would go on to make thePaper MarioandMario and Luigiseries as spiritual successors. These series took the cast of the Mushroom Kingdom back to the RPG genre, yet they were done through vastly different gameplay styles. While they may have filledthe desire for Mario-centric RPGs, they were notSuper Mario RPG, which players yearned to see return one day.

Super Mario RPG’s Remake Does Not Deserve the Same Fate

After 27 years of waiting,Nintendo has finally decided to revisitSuper Mario RPGwith the brand-new remake for Nintendo Switch. The remake takes that acclaimed game and gives it a fancy modern facelift while also tossing in some new mechanics. It not only serves as a fantastic blast from the past for fans but also as a great jumping-on point for those who may be unfamiliar with Mario RPGs. And now that there seems to be a resurgence in popularity for the concept, Nintendo needs to go all in.

While there is a strong chance thatSuper Mario RPGis simply a one-off adventure, it does not need to be. If this remake is successful, then Nintendo should really consider exploring the concept further with an actual sequel. Let players experience a new adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom that sees the likes of Mario, Luigi, and Peachteam up with Mallow, Geno, and a few new faces. It could lead to another riveting experience while also serving as a great way to finally honor that original title.

Right now, it does not seem like Nintendo has any plans to expand this series further nor does it have plans to even update the remake with new content. It feels like this was simply a way to finally deliver on fans' wishes, which is great to see. But this could also be the studio’s chance to rectify the mistake of never giving this game a sequel. And if it does not, then at least RPG fans havePaper Marioto look forward to.
