TheTekkenseries has been one of the popular fighting game properties in the past decade, with the seventh entry in the series being a massive success in the competitive fighting game space. Lauded for its intricate mechanics and roster, it received a lot of post-launch support and DLC. This includes4 seasons of DLC forTekken 7, including a variety of guest fighters like Noctis fromFinal Fantasy 15, Geese Howard fromFatal Fury, and even Negan fromThe Walking Dead.This massive success forTekken 7was reflected in the game’s sales, which are higher than any other previous entry. The previous recordedsales milestone forTekken 7was 8 million copies sold, which was after the release of the new Definitive and Originals Digital Editions of the game were listed for sale. This also means that the entireTekkenseries has sold over 54 million copies, and he thanked the fans for their long-standing support. This makesTekken 7the sixth best-selling fighting game of all time, sitting comfortably among some of the other heavy hitters likeStreet Fighter 2. The current crownholder of this sales milestone isSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, with 29.53 million units sold, whileStreet Fighter 2is at 15.5 million units. The other games in this top five includeMortal Kombat 11,Super Smash Bros. Brawl, andMortal Kombat X.
With support forTekken 7having run its course, Bandai Namco is currently working on the next numbered mainline entry.Tekken 8recently got a new trailerat The Game Awards 2022 show, which gave fans a brief look at the gameplay and story beats. According to Harada,Tekken 8takes place six months after the events of the previous game, after the defeat of Heihachi Mishima at the hands of Kazuya, where Jin Kazama will take on his father in a long-awaited rematch.
