InThe Last of Ussequel, however, environments are opened up a fair bit more, and there are new traversal and stealth options players can consider, especially with the use of crafted explosives. The Last of Usfeatured nail bombs and smoke bombsto unique effect, but one player has now shown just how effective trap mines can be inThe Last of Us 2when placed in the right spots before an encounter begins.

Redditor u/ChimpJuice shares gameplay footage fromThe Last of Us 2, which they state is in celebration of the 4th of July. In it, ChimpJuice has meticulously planted trap mines throughout neighboring areas in Seattle’s dilapidated parking garage, where Ellie first encounters the Seraphites. The footage begins with Ellie lobbing a Molotov onto a raised and exposed level of the parking garage, where a car and a fire can be seen. On impact, the Molotov triggers a series of planted trap mines to detonate, bursting them all successively in tall eruptions of smoke.
The footage then cuts to a Seraphite encounter inThe Last of Us 2that happens soon after, where Ellie is tossed around by a larger Scar wielding a sledgehammer. But before control can even be returned to the player, the Scar steps on a previously planted trap mine and is dismembered, landing on the counter that they threw Ellie across. Other Scars are then heard whistling to one another and attempt to sneak into the room, but also run into trap mines.
The player’s excessive trap mine setup proves useful, and as the final Scar trips a mine, it detonates another series of mines in a chain reaction throughout the room, showing just how many the player must have needed to craft and set down for unsuspecting enemies to run into. ChimpJuice’s footage also makes use ofThe Last of Us 2’s exceptional accessibility featuresin order to stylishly render the game’s character models in the Graphic filter, accentuating and outlining them as if they were in a graphic novel or cel-shaded.
Regardless of which aesthetic filter is used, this footage is a fantastic showcase of how creative fans can get when it comes toThe Last of Us 2’s diverse combat. BecauseThe Last of Us Part 1will provide an overhaul to combat and gameplay, bearing more of a similarity toPart 2in that way, it will be interesting to see how many more ways players are able to approach encounters in the remake.
The Last of Us 2is available now on PS4.
