Despite many being excited about HBO’s adaption ofThe Last of Us, some are afraid that a few alterations may occur. This is due to the norm when it comes to adaptions, as writers and producers will wantdifferent outcomes from the source material, much to the upset of fans of the original. However, there are afew scenes fromThe Last of Usthat fans hope are not changed.
8Been On Both Sides
Perhaps a controversial part of Joel’s character is the conflict involved in his history. Joel is hopeless in a desolate world, filled with infection and the worst that humanity has to offer. However, Joel has been part of the worst humanity has to offer, and tells Ellie that he has “been on both sides”. Joel knows how the Hunters work because he has been one of them before.
It alludes to the fact that Joel has killed innocent people, and taken their gear simply to survive. It adds to his character and makes his redemption as a father feel more earned. The HBO showThe Last of Usshould keep thisconflict of morality.

7Riley’s Tragedy
When audiences are introduced to Ellie and Riley, they are also introduced to a tragic love story. As the two progress through the abandoned shopping mall, they explore their feelings for each other. Before they can decide on what to do with their lives, they are attacked by the infected, drawn to their commotion.
Ellie and Riley end up bitten, and Ellie discovers she is immune. Riley loses her mind to the infection and dies. Ellie carries Riley’s Firefly pendant to remember her by, and their emotionally cut-short ending should remain short, to show the suffering love faces in this new world.

6Giraffes
One of the more beautiful aspects ofThe Last of Usis the freedom of nature. Green plants overrun man-made buildings, and animals roam free in America. Joel and Ellieencounter a herd of giraffes, that roam through Salt Lake City. To see these giraffes in live-action could be a beautiful moment, as Joel and Ellie watch the beauty that remains in nature pass by.
The only thing that could prevent this scene is the fact that it will probably be impractical to get real-life giraffes to interact with a building and get pets. Working with animals in movies and shows is no safe task, nor is the CGI cheap if they want it to look authentic.

5No Pun Intended: Volume Too
There are many gory and distressing aspects toThe Last of Us, but one of its more charming aspects is Ellie’s joke book. Although the jokes and puns are intentionally awful, they highlight agrowing bond between Joel and Ellie, who together can laugh at the horrendous jokes.
These jokes are told after encounters with the Hunters, showing how Ellie is unphased by death and tries to lighten the mood with a few jokes. It shows Ellie’s personality, and how Joel is warming to her, and hopefully, the HBO show includes these moments.

4David’s Evils
One of the more distressing moments ofThe Last of Usis when David captures Ellie. It’s implied that David wants Ellie as a “pet”, and for sexual aspects, despite her unwillingness and age. It shows just how horrifying David and his community of cannibals are, and how Ellie still holds some innocence in a world of death and disease.

David has yet to be revealed in the HBO series, but it is more than likely that he will appear due to being a crucial aspect of the story, and the horrors of humanity. His inclusion should remain faithful, despite the lack of sensitivity he shows.
3Tess Gets Infected
A fan favorite character inThe Last of Usis Joel’s partner, Tess. Tess is a hardened character, who doesn’t take any trouble from anyone, no matter their power. She’s got a great relationship with Joel just waiting to be explored in the HBO series. Unfortunately, despite being a great character, she does not last through the entirety ofThe Last of Us.
Tess is bitten and gets infected. Any bite is a death sentence, and the clock is ticking for Tess, who refuses to turn into one of those “things”, and goes out fighting so Joel and Ellie can escape. Tess’ sacrifice should remain as that, as emotional as it is, she can’t remain alive just because she’s a cool character with stories to tell.

2You’re Not My Daughter
There’s a lot of emotional conflict between Ellie and Joel throughoutThe Last of Us. Joel refuses to accept Ellie, both out of fear of losing someone else and from over 20 years of developing a hardened shell to the world around him. During the game, the two argue about their journey, and Ellie brings up Joel’s daughter.
It’s a tense scene, which shows the acting prowess of Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. The scene islooking to be recreatedby Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey for the HBO show, but whether it will be word for word, only time will tell. Considering the emotional impact, and resentment, and scorn, it most certainly should be.

1Joel’s Decision
At the end of the game, Joel faces a choice. Leave the Firefly hospital, without his surrogate daughter, but with humanity receiving a vaccine against the cordyceps virus. Or, kill the surgeons, and Fireflies, and save Ellie from death. Of course, Joel chooses the latter, refusing to allow the girl he has journeyed across America with to die on an operating table to save a world that doesn’t exist anymore.
This decision by Joel is one of themost debated ones by fans, as Joel kills anyone in his way to saving Ellie. There are repercussions for his actions that lead toThe Last of UsPart 2andpotentially more seasonsfor the HBO series. This decision by Joel is the most important action of the entire game.
