The reveal trailer for the upcomingTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlegame from THQ Nordic,TMNT: The Last Ronin, has dropped online, teasing the first-ever video game adaptation of the popular comic.TMNT: The Last Roninwas reported to be in developmentback in March, but at that point, the studio behind the game was still unknown.

The Last Roninis a bit darker than the typical commercialTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesseries seen on the big screen or on television. The 2020 IDW-published comic tells the story of the lone surviving Turtle on a quest for revenge. Interestingly enough, the identity of the last remaining brother is initially a mystery. During a THQ Nordic showcase, the publisher gave fans their first look atTMNT: The Last Ronin. The 45-second trailer teases the overall plot of the series with four candles obviously meant to represent the four Turtles. Each flame is extinguished as a scene plays in the background—presumably referring to the death of each of the brothers—until only one candle remains lit. The final shot shows the last-remaining Turtle taking on various robotic-looking foes with the text “in development” overlaid.

TMNT:The Last Roninanchored a showcase that hyped up several other upcoming THQ Nordic games (like anew co-opSouth Parktitle) as the publisher likely hoped it would satiate fans as the one last announcement before signing off. The game also appears to be skipping the previous generation of consoles as it was announced to be in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

THQ Nordic is the developer and publisher behind the popularDarksidersseries (among many other games), so fans are understandably optimistic about the upcoming comic book adaptation. TheDarksiders’hack-and-slash action gameplay theoretically lends itself well to aTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesgame, and the reportedGod of Warinspiration also seems fit with theLast Roninrevenge story tone.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtleshave had recent success in the video game space with beat-‘em-up throwbackShredder’s Revengescoring positive reviews, but this upcoming title looks to be the series’ foray into the AAA gaming space.

All in all, reports surroundingThe Last Roninare saying all the right things to fans of the franchise. Between the newMutant Mayhemanimated film and theTurtles crossing over withStreet Fighter 6, it very much feels like the franchise is having a resurgence in pop culture.
