Powell, who plays Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin inTop Gun: Maverick, has been the source of some such speculation. In particular, some fans have focused on the leader of the X-Men, Cyclops. Rumors have abounded that Powell hadalready been cast in theX-Menrole, but Powell plainly denies this in the recent interview. When asked if there was any truth to the rumors, Powell says plainly, “Before Comic-Con, everybody was like, “Dude, are you Cyclops?” No, I’m not. Nobody has called me. I don’t even have one contact info for Marvel, so I have no idea what people are talking about.” After this comment, the interviewer suggests that his character and Miles Teller’s character, Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, should get a spin-off if Powell is not cast as the future Cyclops. In response, Powell simply says, “I think that’s more likely.”

With theX-Men probably still a few years away, it’s likely too premature to think of who will be cast in what role. Powell certainly matches Cyclops' physical appearance, and his acting abilities cannot be doubted after his turn inTop Gun: Maverick. However, his response seems to indicate that it’s a long shot for the role to actually go to him. Why that might be is uncertain, but it may just be that the actor is skeptical about his connections, noting that he does not even have Marvel’s contact information.

Hopefully, whoever is cast can give a performance that matches Powell’s acting ability. Though Powell can still win the role, it does not seem as though he’s all that eager to take it on. But who knows what the future will bring? Perhaps Powell will end up being the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on Cyclops after all.
