Tunicis an indie game that’s generated quite a bit of buzz ever since it was first revealed, with fans praising its art style andZelda-style gameplay.Tunicrecently launched to rave reviews, and so it seems that the game has lived up to the hype. However, there is a discrepancy between the game’s aggregate critic score and its user score, withTunic’s Metacritic page being flooded with negative user reviews for a couple of strange reasons.
Right now, theTunicMetacritic scores are 85 and 86 on PC and Xbox Series X, respectively, and while there’s no overall score for the Xbox One version, its only two reviews are positive. In contrast, the user scores forTunicare 7.3 on PC, 7.4 on Xbox Series X, and a bleak 5.7 on Xbox One. As tends to happen with many new game releases,Tunicis being hit with dozens of overly-negative user reviews that are seemingly just there to drag down its overall user score.

Looking through the negativeTunicuser reviews, there are two main complaints. The first complaint is thatTunicis too much likeZelda, with users describing it as a “rip off” of Nintendo’s popular franchise.Tunichas never made itsZeldainspirations secret, so knocking the game for being what it was advertised to be is a bit strange.
The other main complaint centers aroundTunic’s difficulty, as the game is known to be quite challenging. While it has taken plenty of inspiration fromThe Legend of Zelda,Tunicalso borrows fromDark Souls, and this is reflected in the game’s high difficulty.
Like with most cases of video game review bombing, fans shouldn’t take these negativeTunicreviews very seriously. It’s quite possible that many of these people either barely playedTunicor didn’t play it at all.Metacritic has tried to combat review bombingin the past, but it doesn’t seem like the problem is going anywhere anytime soon, as it seems nearly every big release is subject to it to some degree. It will be interesting to see if Metacritic does anything else to try to stop review bombing in future.
Tunicisn’t the only game that’s recently experienced review bombing on Metacritic. ThePS5 and Xbox Series X versions ofGrand Theft Auto 5have also been review bombed, with that review bombing effort taking aim at the new release’s lack of upgrades and price point.
Tunicis out now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
