TheSouth Parkcartoon has a long history of video game spin-offs going all the way back to the 90s. That list includes an FPS, a 2D game show, a kart racer, and even a tower defense game. That changed in the past decade, with Obsidian’sSouth Park: The Stick of Truthand Ubisoft’sSouth Park: The Fractured but WholeRPGs. But now a newSouth Parkgame is in development from indie studio Question and the future is once again open. Details are still thin on the project, leaving a variety of possibilities for the newSouth Parkproject.

It was a job listing from Question, a recruitment message for the position of Lead Level Designer, that first confirmed the news regarding a newSouth Parkgame. Question makes no attempt to hide the project that it’s working on. It lists it as “South Park,” and it mentions it twice more in the brief description of the project. Question is partnering withSouth Park Studiosto create this new game based in the world ofSouth Park. However, details about the game itself are rare.

As for what kind of game theSouth Parkproject at Question will be, there are at least two distinct camps of possibility. The first camp, and the most likely guess, is that it’s amultiplayer game. Within the job listing is a request that applicants have experience in multiplayer level design and have shipped a multiplayer game in their past. That could imply Question is making aSouth Parkfighting game, a party game, another FPS, or something similar.

A more specific answer is that Question is working on a cooperativeSouth Parkgame. Question has two notable past projects. The first isThe Magic Circle, a unique meta sandbox puzzle game, and the co-op horror gameThe Blackout Club. Question could take that experience onThe Blackout Club, which allows teams of four to take on procedurally-generated missions, and make aSouth Parkrelease. It’s easy to see how the fourSouth Parkboys could take on some of the town’s more villainous foes.

There is an alternative, however. Question’s first game,The Magic Circle, is entirely single-player. Further, the developers at Question have a diverse range of experience on single-player projects, includingBioShock,Dishonored, and both of theSouth Parksingle-player RPGs. Perhaps Question is creating a co-op RPG or a co-op first-person game, building off the experience of its team.

One thing that Question does make clear in its job listing and company information is that it’s a small studio. A project the size and scope of theSouth ParkRPGs is likely out of the question. It’d have to be something smaller, which is why reusing its procedurally generated level technology makes a lot of sense. An asymmetrical multiplayer game,co-op experience, or something similarly small in scope could absolutely work.

Now that the cat is out of the bag regarding thenewSouth Parkgame, an official announcement is likely to be made before too long. Answers regarding what kind of game Question and South Park Studios are making will likely be forthcoming soon, if only to set realistic expectations for fans. At the very least, it’s probably not another kart racer.

ASouth Parkgame from Question is currently in development.
