Many veteranOverwatch 2players likely know how it feels to have teammates leave during a match, which is why a full team of players worked together to help an enemy D.Va player acquire the “Game Over” achievement after the rest of their team left the match early. Even as competitive asOverwatch 2is, the game’s ranked mode remains flawed in many areas due to players quitting early.

Though this has long been a pressing issue for many games beyondOverwatch 2, Blizzard’s online hero shooter has done little to solve the problem over the course of its 7-year lifespan. The launch ofOverwatch 2also saw the introduction of the Defense Matrix initiative, which aimed to reinforce positivity and gameplay integrity. While this program created some new issues for players at the time due to SMS protect being enabled on Blizzard accounts, it was certainly a step in the right direction thanks to the added measures which targeted cheating or otherwise abusive players.

Adequately punishing players who leave matches early often proves to be a more challenging task though, especially when considering the fact that many players will disconnect from matches at times due to connectivity issues. Thankfully, it’s not uncommon to see theOverwatch 2community help other playersand lay their weapons down in matches that see unbalanced team sizes. One such example was shown in a post shared on Reddit by the user Nuu111, which featured the moment that a whole team of players allowed the enemy D.Va to get a free team kill with her Ultimate ability. This allowed them to easily obtain the “Game Over” achievement, which requires players to get 4 or more kills with D.Va’s self-destruct ability.

At launch,Overwatch 2made several changes to the competitive experience, almost completely overhauling many of the systems that were in place throughout the original game. The tweaks to ranks and traditional competitive points led to a lot of controversy, though Blizzard has continually been building on this system since the game was released last October. The imminent fourth season forOverwatch 2will make further improvements to the competitive system, including changes to competitive point gains and Top 500 requirements among other things.

On top of that, theupcomingOverwatch 2Season 4 patchalso seeks to introduce harsher penalties for early leavers. Specifically, these changes aim to make penalties persist across competitive seasons while also affecting such players' skill ratings more severely. This should more effectively discourage players from leaving, though the effects that these changes will have on competitive play will only become clear as the game’s fourth season progresses following its release on April 11.

Overwatch 2is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
