While Capcom just releasedResident Evil Villagea couple of months ago, fans are already looking ahead to what’s next for the long-running survival-horror franchise. The Capcom ransomware leak has seemingly confirmed aResident EvilSwitch game that’s in development, but it also seems that the belovedResident Evil 4is getting a remake as well. Neither of thoseResident Evilprojects have been confirmed in an official capacity, though many fans seem to think a recent tweet is a tease for the leakedResident Evil 4remake.
The tweet was sent out by the officialResident EvilTwitter page and it includes the text “4 Itchy. Tasty.” This tweet kickstarted widespread speculation that Capcom was actively teasing aResident Evil 4remake announcement, but it seems safe to say that fans are jumping to conclusions. While it’s almost certain that aResident Evil 4remake is in active development, thistweet by theResident EvilTwitteris nowhere close to being a tease for it.

HardcoreResident Evilfans will likely recognize the tweet as being from one of the franchise’s most infamous notes. For those unfamiliar with theResident Evilgames, they’re full of notes, letters, and documents that players can find in the game world and read at their leisure. These notes offer background information onResident Evil’s charactersand fill in some blanks when it comes to the story in each game.
This tweet is a reference to a note from the originalResident Evilgame called The Keeper’s Diary. One of the most memorable notes inResident Evil’s history, Keeper’s Diary details an Umbrella employees descent into madness as they become infected with theT-Virus. The diary gets progressively less comprehensible and more disturbing as it goes on, eventually ending with the last page that includes the number 4 and the words “Itchy. Tasty.”
After reading the note, one ofResident Evil’s most famous jump scares happens, as a zombie bursts out of a nearby closet and attacks the player. It’s easily one of thescariestResident Evilmomentsand something that really stands out in the franchise, so it makes sense for the officialResident EvilTwitter to be referencing it. It’s unclear what exactly expired the officialResident EvilTwitter to quote the Keeper’s Diary, but since it’s part of such an iconic moment in theResident Evilfranchise, a reason isn’t really needed.
Resident Evil Conspiracy Theories
The most likely explanation is that this tweet has nothing to do with anything in regards to newResident Evilgame teases, but that hasn’t stopped people from coming up with conspiracy theories about what it could possibly mean. The most popular theory being shared online is that this tweet is referencing theleakedResident Evil 4remake, and that assumption also led to plenty of complaints about Capcom remaking that game instead ofResident Evil Code: Veronica.
There seems to be a great deal ofResident Evilfans who want to seeCode: Veronicaremade, and they came out of the woodwork to complain about the leakedResident Evil 4remake after Capcom sent out this tweet. Of course, it’s already been established that this tweet almost certainly has nothing to do with theResident Evil 4remake and is likely just a nod to the Keeper’s Diary from the firstResident Evilgame, so there’s no real reason forCode: Veronicafans to get upset about it.
Another theory shared on Twitter is that this tweet is meant to be a reference toResident Evil VillageDLC. Some fans have come to the conclusion that the number “4” in the tweet is pointing to four differentResident Evil VillageDLC packs being planned, but again, the reason that the “4” is there is because that’s what was in the Keeper’s Diary note. It’s even less likely that this tweet has anything to do withResident Evil VillageDLC, and so fans shouldn’t hold their breath.
All that’s known about theResident Evil VillageDLC is that it’s in development. Capcom confirmed as much at its latestResident Evilanniversary event, but stopped short of providing specifics about what fans can expect from the game’s DLC. It seems that theResident Evil VillageDLC is in the early stages of development, and so it may still be some time before fans learn more, especially if rumors of aResident EvilSwitch gamereleasing this year turn out to be true.
The uproar over this seemingly innocent tweet from the officialReisdent EvilTwitter account is a good indication that fans are hungry to learn more about the franchise’s future. With 2021 being the25th anniversary of theResident Evilfranchise, Capcom likely has more announcements and surprises in store, so hopefully fans get their wish sooner rather than later and don’t have to overanalyze tweets like this.
Of course, there is a slim possibility that Capcom is using this page from Keeper’s Diary to tease fans, but that seems highly unlikely.
