World of Warcraftmight be adding a new type of Dragonriding drake toDragonflightsoon. Though not surprising at first glance, the evidence points towards an unexpected addition to the growing collection of Dragonriding mounts inWorld of Warcraft.
Recently,World of WarcraftlaunchedEmbers of Neltharion, its first major patch forDragonflight. The content update added a new zone, an expansion of theDragonflightstory campaign, and new customizations, glyphs, and abilities for Dragonriding mounts.

However, players might have just gotten a first look at anotherDragonriding customization coming toWorld of Warcraftin the future. A new item called the Grotto Netherwing Drake was discovered on the Public Test Realm forDragonflight. The Grotto Netherwing Drake is listed as an independent Dragonriding mount, which would make it the sixth of its kind. There are currently no icons, models, or other assets associated with this mount besides the item entry.
There is currently no proof this item will actually be added in the future, or how players will get it if it will be. Right now, Grotto Netherwing Drake has a Trader’s Tender cost associated with it, indicating it might come toWorld of Warcraft’snew Trading Post featurein the future. Items with a cost of 999 Trader’s Tender have usually been placeholders for the free Traveler’s Log reward, so it is possible this mount could be earned in such a way in the future.
That said, many agree it would be strange to offer a full Dragonriding mount outside the expansion’s campaign, so some wonder if the Grotto Netherwing Drake will be unlockable in Patch 10.2 or other futureDragonflightpatches.World of Warcraftrecently held a developer broadcastthat hinted another dragonflight would be involved in the story soon, so it is possible the Netherwing Dragonflight of Outland could appear, giving players the chance to unlock them as Dragonriding drakes in the process.
In the meantime, players can access the first leg of theEmbers of Neltharionstory right now, with more chapters of the story dropping alongsideDragonflight’snew Aberrus raid on May 9. This will include Chapter 5 of theEmbers of Neltharioncampaign, which awards players with the Winding Slitherdrake–the first new Dragonriding mount added afterDragonflight. IfWorld of Warcraftcontinues the trend of offering one new Dragonriding mount each patch, perhapsDragonflightPatch 10.2will give players the chance to ride a high-definition version of the shark-like dragons fromBurning Crusadewith the Grotto Netherwing Drake.
