Starfieldwill be more than just a “reskin” of something likeSkyrim, offering more than the epic RPG, according to Xbox Game Studios' boss.Starfieldis the first new IP for Bethesda in 25 years, and many have taken to the idea that the upcoming sci-fi title from the developer will be likeThe Elder ScrollsorFalloutgames, only set in space. As science fiction isn’t something Todd Howard and his team are known for, it may be difficult to separate the company’s previous work from this approaching release.
Comprising adevelopment team twice the size ofFallout 76,Starfieldis set to be one of the most epic games of this generation. Fans have already seen enough teasers and images to whet the whistle, including some gameplay footage to really hammer home what players can expect when the title finally drops sometime in 2023. However, no matter what Bethesda keeps throwing out there for all to see, many are still expecting it to be a lot likeTESbut with the ability to fly a spaceship instead of fighting dragons, for example.

However, Head of Microsoft Studios Matt Booty has insisted thatStarfieldwill be more than just a reskin of what the developer has worked on in the past. When asked outright whether the game would essentially be “Skyrimin space,” Booty insisted that Todd Howard is not going to “sit still” on what’s come before. He goes on to say that the upcoming sci-fi title will represent a move forward, not just in terms of the visuals, which he refers to as “NASA punk,” but also in terms of how it brings a lot to the genre and how fans will likely be surprised by some of the new ideas that are being implemented. The conversation begins around the 1:25:17 mark.
Of course, what most people want to know is when the game will actually be launching. Sadly, there’s still no concrete date, but Booty sais thatStarfieldwill come out sometime afterRedfall, which also has no finalized release date. Both titles are due out within the first half of 2023, after Bethesda had to delay them to add some extra polish.
There’s a lot ofhype aroundStarfield, especially given that it’s something different from what the developer has really done before, as mentioned earlier. There’s no telling how successful the game will be, but with Bethesda also working onThe Elder Scrolls 6andFallout 5, there’s a lot for fans of open-world stories to look forward to.
